The artist's impression highlights the cafe culture theme which is to be introduced to shoppers.

Centre owner Ivanhoe Cambridge believes the introduction of chic cafes will help create a bustling and cosmopolitan environment at the shopping mall.

Susan Nicol, general manager at St Enoch, said: "We want to transform St Enoch Centre into a 21st century shopping destination that will offer a retail and leisure experience which will be second to none."

The coffee bars are among a number of attractions planned as part of the upgrade at the centre, which opened in 1989 and attracts up to 20million shoppers a year.

There will also be more shops, a multi-screen cinema and a nightclub. Work has begun on a new entrance - a huge glass structure which will front onto Argyle Street.

Ivanhoe Cambridge hopes to launch the new-look mall before Christmas.
