A SAILING charity is looking for volunteers to help make a difference to young people's lives.

Ocean Youth Trust Scotland offers 12 to 24-year-olds the chance to take part in trips on the West Coast of Scotland.

The Trust operates three of the most modern training vessels in Europe - including a former BT Round the World Yacht Race boat.

Professional skippers help more than 200 volunteers from across the UK organise 90 voyages a year - taking 700 young people out as far as Iceland and Norway.

Volunteers can earn qualifications up to Yachtsmaster Instructor during residential and expedition courses.

Young people taking part in the trips often come from disadvantaged backgrounds or have special needs - but flourish during their time on board.

Erica Kemmet, chairwoman of Glasgow's OYTS group, said: "For many young people it can be a truly life-changing experience.

"It's really rewarding for crew and sea staff alike, and a lot of fun."

OYTS's latest vessel Alba Endevour - a former BT Round the World Yacht Race boat - will be on display at the Clyde River Festival on Saturday and Sunday July 19-20.

Erica said: "The Alba Endeavour allows over 1000 young Scots to come aboard this year.

"As with all our other vessels it is manned by professional skippers but the majority of sea staff are volunteers.

"We are looking to recruit more staff.

"Experience is not necessary as training is given but a dedication to work with young people is essential."
