ATHLETICS Scottishathletics took the first steps towards their 2010 Commonwealth Games preparations yesterday by announcing a 21strong group who have been selected for support programmes focusing on Delhi, and three for the World Mountain Running Trophy, writes Doug Gillon.

Nigel Hetherington, newly confirmed as the governing body's performance development manager, said the selection process was "robust and objective".

"Even the athletes who missed final selection, though naturally disappointed, appear upbeat and determined to make a future case for inclusion."

The squad, announced yesterday, is:

Andrew Lemoncello (steeplechase), Carey Marshall (400m), Nigel Leighton, Hayley Haining, and Susan Partridge (marathon), Joanna Ross, Neil Dougal, Graham Oudney, and Ian Munro (800m), Mark Taylor (high jump), Gillian Cooke (long jump), Gillian Kerr (triple jump), Shirley Webb and Graeme Allan (hammer), Alison Rodger (shot), Alan Wales (1500m), Kirsty Law (discus), Nony Mordi (triple jump), Iain Donnan, Tracey Brindley, Jo Symonds (all WMRT) euro There are also Scottish athletes on the UKAWorld Class Programmes:
