Music festival gets boot from city pitches

by Vivienne Nicoll

A SUMMER music festival has this year been banned from using a Glasgow park.

For the past two years Indian Summer has been staged in Victoria Park in the West End.

But furious locals said thousands of young revellers left the area looking like a quagmire.

And because the park was so churned-up it could not be used for months by youngsters of Broomhill Sports Club.

Partick West councillor Aileen Colleran said the final straw came when yobs threw a generator used in the festival into the park's pond and five swans, ducks and seagulls were affected.

Festival organisers have been told they cannot return to the Park and they are now looking for a new location.

Last year, more than 5000 Indie fans flocked to the park to enjoy acts including cult US band The Flaming Lips.

Ms Colleran said: "I supported the idea of trying out a new event in Victoria Park.

"The Glasgow Show used to be held there but it outgrew the area and I think the same thing has happened with this particular event.

"I know a lot of people enjoyed it but last year there was damage."

Ms Colleran added: "The grass area has not really recovered and it would be set back even further if the festival was to be held there for a third year."

Council chiefs are now in discussion with festival bosses to try to find a new location for the event.

Ms Colleran added: "I hope Indian Summer goes ahead somewhere this year as it is a quirky mix of bands and artists."

Broomhill Sports Club secretary Stephen Prince said: "We are delighted there will not be an event at the park this year it is a sensible decision."

Organisers PCL were not available for comment.

Hopefully they can find a site that can be managed better. This was a great wee festival and it should continue without the minority ruining it for everyone else.

I don't see why Kelvingrove can't be used as it hosts loads of other festivals now

This is the same issue as Go Ape in Pollok park, a good thing in the wrong place.

Agree with above. Its a great festival, it has become too popular though and needs to expand

I hope the new venue isn't bellahouston park which has sustained horrendous damage over the past few years from a variety of outdoor events.Surly there must be some entrepreneur, out there who can acquire a site for this festival to continue. It's rare for we to congratulate council officials , but this time they have got it right by refusing to host such events..

Did no one examine and document as to why the disorder took place. Do these festival organiser merely turn up on the day and ignore the streets of youth within the surrounding area? Were these local youths left out of the party? There is the old football pitches over in North Kelvin, off Queen Margaret Drive. That would be suitable for any event once the over-growth is given a trim. Having restricted access allows for good crowd control and security.c

We do not get dry enough summers for this event to be held in the same place yearly the ground needs time to dry out and recover. Why this was never taken into consideration at the time i dont know.Somewhere with a more tolerant surface should be the aim of the organizers.
