Glasgow Art School students are unhappy that their ceramics course may be axed

A CAMPAIGN to save the ceramics degree course at Glasgow School of Art has won support from around the world.

An international contingent of students have joined the fight to retain the world-famous undergraduate course, the only one of its kind left in Scotland.

Earlier this month the Evening Times revealed art school academics were being asked to axe the BA Ceramic Design programme.

Now people from Malta, Norway, Holland and the United Arab Emirates have contacted us to express their concern at the plan and many foreign students are also lobbying politicians. Helen Morken, a fourth year distance learning student from Norway, said: "It is an absolute scandal the leadership at the GSA is proposing to phase out undergraduate ceramics."

Homa Farley, also a fourth year who lives between the UK and UAE, said: "I am writing to express my feeling of frustration and disappointment over the proposed closure of the Glasgow School of Arts ceramics department."

A GSA spokesman said: "We've had a number of responses in connection with this. We will respond to everyone who is in contact with us."

A final decision will be agreed in March by the art school's academic council.

You'll have to excuse me if I don't appear sufficiently scandalised.

Brad,

Well there seems to be a lot of ceramics around and it must be a £multi-billion global business. Glasgow should remain a significant centre for design. Plus, unlike paintings sculpture and installations, ceramics are pretty affordable to us punters.

Not an absolute scandal agreed but a great pity.

That depends... is this course any good? Do people want to follow it? Is it relevant to the global business you rightly identify?
