A walk on the child side

HUNDREDS of children stepped out in style when they took part in the Great Wee Scottish Walk to help raise vital funds for 100 charities.

It was a glorious day for a stroll yesterday and youngsters - many with their parents - took full advantage of the warm weather.

For two miles a line of children - all under the age of 16 - snaked through Glasgow Green and there were so many wee walkers that starting times had to be staggered.

Sponsored by supermarket giant Tesco, the event also featured the High School of Glasgow Pipe Band, Chaplin's disco bus and Graeme Lightbody, from Kevin Keegan's Soccer Circus, who entertained crowds with demonstrations.

Every youngster who took part in the walk paid a £5 entry fee but adults who accompanied them did so for free.

Hundreds of parents are expected to follow in the footsteps of their kids at a Great Scottish Walk in Bellahouston Park on May 25.

Joining the adults will be Scots track legend Liz McColgan along with Govan MSP and Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon, who said: "It is hugely encouraging to see organisations like the Great Scottish Walks organise events such as the eight Wee Walks across the country.

"These walks will introduce children to the fun of taking part in physical activity."

More than 1600 children took part in Great Wee Scottish Walks last year and more than 6000 adults participated in a series of Great Scottish Walks. Together they raised more than £1million for charity.

How sad that we have to do this topromote execise with kiddies.

In the old days, you used to just goout and run about until dark. Nowadays, kids are glued to their X boxes, getting fat and frying their brains.

that is not strictly true, it was the threat of fluffy slipper to arse mainly and they soon found the power to outrun me!
