Jahangir Hanif was elected councillor for Glasgow Southside Central in 2007.
He graduated from Strathclyde University and has worked in the ward on and off for the past 20 years.
Mr Hanif previously fought the council seat in 2003, when the ward was known as Govanhill, and slashed Labour’s majority to less than half. His main policies during last year’s election campaign were crime and poverty in the area.
A wealthy businessman, he has acquired a huge property portfolio, including many rented-out flats.
He is on the committee of Pollokshields & Southside Central local housing forum and Glasgow City Council’s planning committee. He is also a member of the Kashmir Education Foundation.

JAHANGIR Hanif is a wealthy businessman who owns properties across west Scotland.

But the SNP councillor has had to fight claims he is operating as a slum landlord, despite campaigning against poor housing.

It was reported last month that he pockets £500 a month for a flat in Westmoreland Street, Govanhill, occupied by a family of five Romanians, who sell the Big Issue.

Nearby residents claim the flat's close is littered with drugs equipment, graffiti and rubbish.

The street is nicknamed Ground Zero' by local people because of the poor state of the area.

Mr Hanif has owned the property since 2004 and it is listed on the council's Register Of Interests, in which all councillors must state businesses or jobs that earn them money.

At a housing meeting in his Govanhill ward, Mr Hanif promised to bring Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to the street to show her how bad it is. However, he failed to mention he owns a flat there.

Mr Hanif told the meeting of 200 local people it was wrong for landlords to keep the properties in poor condition.

Furious locals say the street has become a dumping ground, with rubbish in the backyards attracting rats and infestations of cockroaches and maggots.

The flat owned by Mr Hanif is at the top level of a dilapidated common close, where the ceiling has gaping holes and the plaster is falling off the walls.

However, Mr Hanif denied accusations he is a slum landlord. He said: "The flat was clean. I have no control over the close.

"It is a bad property, they all are in the street. I have tried to put the street at the top of the political agenda."

His eldest daughter Noor, 17, claimed her father cut costs in the family home in Newton Mearns when the property was being renovated.

She said: "It was like a bomb site. The neighbours complained and jobs in the house were done on the cheap."

Mr Hanif owns flats across Glasgow at addresses in Cathcart Road; West Princes Street, near Charing Cross; Otago Street, Kelvinbridge; and Barrland Street, Pollokshields, as well as properties in Ayrshire.

He is also listed as owning the Seabank Nursing Home in Saltcoats, Ayrshire.

His family say he is also building a property empire in his native Pakistan.

The Evening Times revealed last month Mr Hanif was facing court action over a flood hit-flat.

Stewart Daniels, 61, has launched a legal fight against Mr Hanif to claw back thousands of pounds he has spent repairing water damage to his home.

Mr Daniels lives below a flat rented out by the councillor in Barrland Street.

The councillor has been summoned to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court this month over the dispute.

Mr Daniels said: "You expect someone in public office to do work for the good of the people, but all he seems to be doing is benefiting himself."

The boot is certainly going into Mr Hanif today.

Now, if we can get a story on the David Marshall affair, then the ET might actually be worth reading.

David Marshall's fiasco is not over by a long chalk.
He will have to account for all his expenses to Parliament.
And we all thought it was just the Tories who had sleaze.

Get the boot in to them if they deserve it!

Most of the money this Muslim Councillor will be getting for these flats are paid for by us by our taxes which will be paid in housing benefit.

Yes Hanif needs to me made an example of here and the if Glasgow City Council decide to condone his actions then they should also be held accountable for their stupidity. Mr. Purcell there is no way that you can justify Hanif's behaviour and surely as leader of the City Council you have a hatchetman role to play here.

There is all this talk of destroying 'the culture of' problems - violence, gangs, or whatever - like it is some abstract independent category. If you want to destroy the culture of anything, slum landlording in this case, then take out the scum bags who reproduce it. Simple. This is the way to destory any undesireable culture while also sending out a message to other scum bags who are thinking of keeping the culture of slum landlording alive. If there are scum bags who are stupid enough to try slum landlording - and I am sure that they are - then they too should get the same treatment and eventually their exploitative culture will choke on itself and die.

The message from the City Council should be this simple: If you are a slum landlord then clean up your act otherwise we will do it for you.

your missing the point, if he is renting out slums he should not get a penny of tax payers money
Posted by: atrocityexhibition, Glasgow on 1:50pm Thu 7 Aug 08
yeah he should be cut down so that other scum bags, cause let's face it that's what slum landlords are, can watch what happens.

If this man owns a nursing home, what is the betting that the residents eat the cheapest food he can find and the staff are paid the minimum possible? How many foreign workers does he employ at the nursing home? What do they get paid? Owning slum property and a nursing home - 2 money-making operations!!!!

Word just in from SNP HQ. The four SNP press officers unable to comment on stories about Cllr Hanif are preparing a top Press Release to sort this nonsense out ...

A senior spokesnat said, come now, move along please, nothing to see here. Let's put this silliness into context. Alex Salmond often plays with his AK47 whilst puting a line on at the bookies and most days you can see Nicola Sturgeon shooting pigeons fae her hoose with one.

They are as common as mustard and the SNP promises to provide every household with their very own AK47 if they promise to vote for us. See now, sorted.

Och aye, in the new Scotland, it's great fun to teach yer kids to work a killing machine.

I dont think it should matter what his political affiliations are - anyone who takes their kids to a holiday camp where they can learn to shoot real guns hasnt grasped the meaning of "quality family time"obviously. If this wasnt a responsible member of society (someone for example who can sign your passport application)but just Joe Normal he would already be in custody for potential terrorist affiliations.

Councillor Hanif must love seeing thousands of Eastern European Roma coming to Glasgow with the sole intention of selling the Big Issue. There are thousands of them now in Govanhill.

It appears even though they are housed, they are still allowed to play the system and sell the Big Issue. i.e 'It was reported last month that he pockets £500 a month for a flat in Westmoreland Street, Govanhill, occupied by a family of five Romanians, who sell the Big Issue.'

It also appears too they still receive Housing Benefit, paid for by the likes of myself.

As the government are always keen to point out how our economy requires an influx of asylum seekers and economic migrants could somebody – and I mean this sincerely – please supply the Evening Times with statistics showing A- the percentage of Roma in Glasgow who work (and I mean officially i.e paying taxes) and B - the percentage who sell the Big Issue.

I would hazard a guess that the answer to A would be precious few (if any).

We can slag off Councillor Hanif and slum landlords all we like – and i vote he should resign – but slum landlords have been around in Govanhill for decades. The problems with the area going seriously downhill can be traced back to the influx of Roma.

Too true. The area wasn't exactly in pristine condition two and half to three years ago before the first of these people arrived.

But it is utterly unbearable now.

I would never have believed that I would feel the antipathy towards people that I feel towards the gypsy community that has arrived here.

I am an ordinary, decent and fair minded person who treats people with the consideration I wish to be treated with.

However, there comes a time to say enough.

Walk through the ground zero part of Govanhell and you will be propositioned by people with a foreign accent offering sex industry services with workers of any age. This is not racist scaremongering by me, this has happened to me and to friends, so why arn't social services, the police etc dealing with this because there is child protection issues here. P.S. this is common knowledge in the Govanhell area.

This nursing home may be a real danger to the residents. Someone should, must, get into this home ASAP and have it officially checked out.

I think this is rediculous, any councilor carrying on in this fashion should be deported to his birth place and not play any part in the running of my country. With everything being so politically correct, how do you let this type of scum into office. I really think like in the US you have to be born in the country to be president. I think in order to sustain my heritage you must be born in the UK in order to hold any office and proove it. PUT this guy out of office!!! followed by Alex Salmond the liar!!!!!!
