A BRAVE dog called Lucky, who is dying of cancer, has found a loving home for the last days of her life - thanks to Evening Times readers.
The four-year-old Staffordshire cross was handed into Uddingston's Dogs Trust at the start of August when her owners discovered she was pregnant.
But a routine examination revealed she had a cancerous tumour around her rib cage.
Lucky gave birth to 10 pups, four of whom sadly died of natural causes, and proved to be an excellent mother.
But she became stressed in the kennels and Trust bosses appealed to Evening Times readers to give her a home where she could spend her last days. Within hours of the story appearing, they were contacted by a loving couple who had nursed two German shepherds through the same condition.
The couple, who have asked to remain anonymous, had decided they could not face the heartache of having another dog.
But their hearts melted when they read of Lucky's plight and have offered to give her the love and affection she craves.
And Pet Undertaker in Lanark was so touched with by the story they have given the Trust vouchers which will pay for her cremation.
Claire Kelman, assistant manager of the animal shelter, said: "The couple, who have grown-up children, saw the article in the Evening Times and phoned us wanting to rehome Lucky. Their last German shepherd passed away two years ago. The couple wanted to make sure the remainder of Lucky's life was happy and in a home, not a kennel.
"Lucky gets all the attention we can give her but it can be very stressful in kennels and it is not the same as being in a home with a family."
A recent X-ray showed the tumour has grown although nobody can predict how long she has left.
But Claire added: "The family came in at the weekend to meet her and she was very excited and really happy with a waggy tail."
Thanks to the Evening Times, all six of Lucky's puppies have also found happy homes.
