A YOUNG Glasgow designer has been named a winner in the Oscars of the industry.

Andy Murray, 22, of Pollokshields, came out on top of 150 entrants across the UK to land first prize in the D&AD Student Awards for product design for his furniture.

The former Glasgow Academy pupil was the only Scottish finalist in the educational charity awards which represents the global creative, design and advertising communities.

Previous winners have gone on to work for household names such as Hamleys and MTV Europe and the awards have also recognised Apple computers for its iMac design.

Andy is studying a Masters design course at Edinburgh Napier University and won for his furniture collection called Sea Defence.

He said: "I am thrilled to take the top prize, when you consider some of the other fantastic designs that were shortlisted.

"My recent work is a reaction to the current economic climate, showing how designers need to think in the recession.

"In a time of austerity, designers must look at what the consumers need and want from products: functionality without compromising on style."

The award is the third industry recognition Andy has gained this year. He was one of just 15 UK students chosen to exhibit at the Ideal Home Show 2009 in April, where his Kitchen Toolbox range of cutlery that doubles as DIY tools were a big hit.

And last month he exhibited his Made By collection at the New Designers 2009 show in London.

Alex Gilkison, head of school of arts and creative industries at Napier said: "Andy's achievements are fantastic and a testament to the great work going on in the creative school."
