the second round of the Australian Masters started so well for Graeme McDowell earlier today in Melbourne when the Ulsterman carded an eagle and a birdie on his first two holes...but then the wheels came off with a clatter.

He ended up with a round of 77, racking up six bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-four sixth to tumble to four-over.

He said: "I need something, I either need to go and batter myself in the gym tonight or batter myself in the casino. I'm not sure which one is going to happen but probably the former.

"The harder I tried the worse I got and it was just one of those humbling days."

There were no such worries for Adam Scott, who shot a 70 for an aggregate of 137, three shot behind local player Matthew Guyatt.

"It was a tough day." said Scott, "But I look to be in pretty good shape."
