FORSTER (6) The Englishman had shots from Kim Kallstrom and Jurado in either half well covered.

Had little hope of preventing Ari's deft chip going in.

LUSTIG (6) Got forward and attacked whenever the opportunity arose. Set up Georgios Samaras with a scoring chance early in the second half with an accurate cross from the right flank.

AMBROSE (6) Made several crucial blocks at the back and was excellent in the air, but also struggled to contain his Nigerian team-mate Emenike. Hit the side netting with a header at 1-1.

WILSON (6) Had plenty of work to do on an evening when Celtic spent a fair amount of time on the back foot. Found it difficult to contain Ari and Emenike, but stuck to his task.

IZAGUIRRE (4) Was at fault at Spartak's goal. Failed to anticipate Emenike's pass and then gave Ari the time and space he needed to compose himself and net. Looked suspect defensively.

COMMONS (7) His left-foot effort on goal flew just wide on the half-hour mark, but he made no mistake with his penalty going in off the bar.

BROWN (7) His physicality and exuberance in midfield were absolutely vital with Victor Wanyama suspended. Ran himself into the ground.

KAYAL (6) Made his first start in the Champions League group stage this season. Allowed himself to be brushed aside by Emenike ahead of the Spartak goal, but his workrate could not be faulted.

MULGREW (6) Played on the left of midfield. His delivery into the Spartak area from set-pieces and open play always looked dangerous. Unlucky not to score with a header.

SAMARAS (8) His stunning form in Europe continued. Was a handful for the Spartak defence all night. Set up his side's goal in the first half, hit the post in the second and then won a late penalty.

HOOPER (7) Pounced on a defensive error by Insaurralde in the 21st minute and drilled the ball beyond Pesyakov. Foraged for another opening until the final whistle.

SUBSTITUTES: MATTHEWS (3) Took over from Lustig to help his side see out the victory.

LASSAD (3) The Tunisian made his Champions League debut when he replaced Kayal late on. Hardly involved.

LEDLEY (3) Took over from Brown at the death.
