SINCE Rangers were drawn with Dundee United at Tannadice in this season's Scottish Cup there has been plenty controversy surrounding the tie due to the Ibrox club's supporters boycott of the match...

GEORGE (Bishopbriggs) – Rangers have been drawn away to Dundee United in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup. Did they play each other at the same stage last year?

They did indeed. Dundee United knocked Rangers out of the Scottish Cup at Ibrox with a 2-0 victory on February 5, 2012.

Two first-half goals from Gunning and Russell settled the tie.

W SHAW (Cambuslang) – I know that, nowadays, big clubs tend to raise their own young players and rarely recruit from the Junior ranks. I also know that, in the past, many star players were signed from Junior clubs. Can you tell me if the following Rangers and Celtic legends Jimmy McGrory, Tommy Gemmell, Mike Haughney, Willie Johnston, Jim Baxter and Davie Wilson started with the Juniors and, if so, what were their clubs?

All six players mentioned played in the Junior game with the following teams:–

Jimmy McGrory – St Roch's; Tommy Gemmell – Coltness United; Mike Haughney – Newtongrange Star; Willie Johnston – Lochore Welfare; Jim Baxter – Crossgates Primrose; Davie Wilson – Baillieston Juniors.

R. JONES (Glasgow) – Could you supply details of a match in the early Fifties when Henry Morris of East Fife scored a hat-trick for Scotland on his international debut.

This match was on October 1, 1949, against Ireland in Belfast. It was a World Cup qualifier and Scotland won the match 8-2.

The score at half-time was 5-0 to Scotland with goals by Waddell (2), Steel, Reilly and Mason.

In the second half Ireland scored two goals to make it 5-2, but in the last 20 minutes Morris took over and scored his hat-trick to make the final score 8-2.

A hat-trick on his debut was a great feat but strangely he was not rewarded with another cap for his country.

T. SPENCE (Glasgow) – In season 1964-65 Third Lanark finished bottom of the First Division with seven points from 34 games. Could you give details of the seven points total.

Of the 34 games Thirds won three and drew one. They drew with Motherwell at Fir Park 3-3, beat Aberdeen 4-1 at Cathkin, beat Partick Thistle 1-0 at Firhill and finally beat St Mirren 2-1 at Cathkin.

They lost an equal total of 15 home and away matches. They reached the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup where they lost to Dunfermline Athletic 4-2 after two drawn matches.
