RONNIE SIMPSON was one of the Lisbon Lions when Celtic defeated Inter Milan 2-1 in the 1967 European Cup final in Lisbon...

J. ROBERTSON (Glasgow) –Did Celtic's legendary goalkeeper Ronnie Simpson play in any of their European Cup matches in their run to the 1970 final? I know Evan Williams played in the final when they lost 2-1 (after extra time) to Feyenoord.

Ronnie Simpson did not start in any of Celtic's nine European Cup ties that season. In the first two rounds, John Fallon was in goal for home and away ties against Basel and Benfica.

In the other ties, home and away games against Fiorentina and Leeds United, and the final against Feyenoord, Evan Williams was between the posts.

This was Ronnie's last season at Celtic Park. He played in two league matches and the League Cup semi-final replay win against Ayr United.

D. McILROY (Glasgow) – I know there was great rivalry between Willie Henderson of Rangers and Jimmy Johnstone of Celtic for the right-wing position in the Scotland team, but did they ever play in the same side? Can you also supply the number of full caps both won?

Can only find one instance when both started in the same Scotland side. On October 22, 1966, at Ninian Park, Cardiff, against Wales in a 1-1 draw.

Jimmy Johnstone was outside-right and Willie Henderson was outside-left. Denis Law scored the Scotland goal.

As far as caps go, Henderson won 29, scoring five goals, and Johnstone won 23, scoring four goals.

A. BLACK (Castlemilk) – I have a slightly vague recollection of being taken to a game at Ibrox in either the late 50s or early 60s, between Scotland and the Scottish League. I do remember that the game attracted a large crowd and there were lots of goals. Can you identify the game and give details?

The game you remember was played on March 16, 1959, and ended Scotland 5, Scottish League 6.

The crowd is listed as 40,000 and an unusual fact about the goals was that three separate players scored hat-tricks – Colrain for Scotland and White and Kerr for the League.

The other scorers were Mackay and Leggat.

Scotland: Brown (Dundee), Parker (Everton), Caldow (Rangers), Cumming (Hearts), Evans (Celtic), MacKay (Spurs), Scott (Rangers), Collins (Everton), Colrain (Celtic), Gibson (Hibs), Leggat (Fulham).

Scottish League: Wallace (Airdrie), McKay (Celtic), Baird (Partick Thistle), Smith (Celtic), McCallum (Third Lanark), McCann (Motherwell), McEwan (Raith Rovers), White (Falkirk), Kerr (Partick Thistle), Gray (Third Lanark), Ormond (Hibs).

The match was refereed by Tom "Tiny" Wharton.
