BILEL MOHSNI today vowed to help shore up a leaky defence that almost cost Rangers their unbeaten SPFL League One record.

Mohsni and his Gers team-mates were unable to prevent visitors Arbroath going in front twice at Ibrox. They allowed David Banjo to score in the second minute of the match and Bobby Linn to net early in the second half. Goals from Jon Daly and David Templeton and a late penalty by skipper Lee McCulloch secured a narrow 3-2 victory.

But for a long spell it looked as if the part-time Gayfield Park club was going to pull off a massive upset. Mohsni, who had a goal chalked off for offisde, has hit the headlines this season for his remarkable goalscoring exploits.

But the centre-half, who has been on target eight times in the 2013/14 campaign, also takes pride in his side's shut-out record. The French-Tunisian defender has helped Ally McCoist's side to keep no fewer than 21 clean sheets this term.

And he wants Rangers to add to that tally when they take on Brechin City at home in the league this weekend.

He said: "Losing the two goals was a shame for us. We have to concentrate far better at the back than we did at the weekend and try to keep clean sheets in the future.

"The goals we lost were bad. I think we need to concentrate a little bit more than we did against Arbroath. We know we can score goals. We have a lot of players in the team who are very good in that area.

"But we will make things very difficult for ourselves if we keep defending the way we did at the weekend. We won the game, but it could have been a lot easier if we had done our job better at the back than we did."

Mohsni picked up the Man of the Match award after the Arbroath game - but he feels he can perform better at the back.

He said: "We have defended very well and have not conceded many goals. It is something that, as defenders, is very important for us to do. It is, of course, always good to score goals for the team and I have done that this season. But I am in the team to defend and that is what I must concentrate on.

"The last time we let in more than one goal in a game was against Brechin back in October. We responded well to that performance as a defence.

"We didn't let in a goal in the next three matches. Hopefully we can respond to this game in the same way - starting this weekend against Brechin."

Rangers will now win League Two by March 15 at the latest if they win their next six games and could even claim it before then if nearest challengers Dunfermline slip up.

The Light Blues have still dropped only two points all season and have won 21 of their 22 fixtures in the championship up to now and boss Ally McCoist said: "It's to the players' eternal credit they've given themselves an opportunity to keep going and win a title.

Meanwhile, Ryan Stevenson, the Hearts attacking midfielder, has been linked with a move to Rangers after being photographed at the Arbroath game.

McCoist, though, has stated that he does not expect to bring any players in during the January transfer window due to the Ibrox club's ongoing financial issues.

Stevenson, a former Ipswich Town player, has turned down the chance to move to Partick Thistle.
