I WAS pleased to see that Rangers supporters who had been planning to protest at the Stranraer game today had called off their demonstrations.

It was the right thing to do. It would not have been appropriate to act like that in a game in which Sandy Jardine will be honoured and remembered.

Ally McCoist's side will be presented with the SPFL League One trophy this afternoon and both they and the fans have every right to celebrate.

It is what Sandy would have wanted them to do. I spoke to him at Ibrox about a month ago.

He loved being at the ground watching the team play.

But I am sure it will be a sombre occasion and I am sure the celebrations will have been toned down from what was originally planned.

There will be a minute's silence before the game and I have no doubt Sandy's name will be chanted throughout the 90 minutes. And rightly so.

Sandy was such an important figure for the club both on and off the park over the years.

He will be sorely missed by everyone around the place.

Ally and his players, though, should not feel uneasy about enjoying their day.

They have worked hard over the last eight or nine months to win the third-tier title and another promotion and they should certainly enjoy it.
