STUART BANNIGAN admits momentum is key for Partick Thistle as they fight for their Premiership place in the coming weeks.

Alan Archibald's side followed up their impressive win over Kilmarnock with a 1-1 draw at home to St Mirren last Friday night as they added another well-earned point to their tally this term.

It could have been an even better night for Thistle if they had been able to convert any of their second-half chances after Kenny McLean had cancelled out Kris Doolan's opener just before the break.

A trip to Easter Road is next on the agenda for Jags and Bannigan knows wins are still a must if they are to secure their top-flight status.

He said: "It is all about momentum at this stage of the season and putting points on the board every week. We have taken four points from the first two games after the split so it has been a decent start for us.

"We would probably have taken that before the start so we have to be pleased with what we have done so far.

"We will go to Easter Road this weekend and look to get another positive result. We didn't look at how many points it would take to stay up, we just wanted to win them all.

"There is something to play for in every game and it is changing all the time so you can't afford to look too far ahead. It is so tight.

"Draws might not be enough, and we probably need another couple of wins so we are going to Hibs looking for the three points.

"We played well through there earlier in the season, but only got a point. They scored late on, it fell to them in the box in the last minute, and that was another hard one to take.

"We've dropped a lot of points like that in the last few minutes of games unfortunately."

Thistle got off to the perfect start under the Firhill floodlights on Friday, but couldn't claim their second successive win, with Doolan's neat header the only time they could find a way past keeper Chris Dilo.

There is still little to choose between the teams fighting it out at the foot of the table and Bannigan wasn't too downhearted with a share of the spoils with the Saints.

He said: "It was probably a fair result in a decent game.

"I thought we played well in the first half although we were disappointed with the way we ended it, with them having a five-minute spell and getting their goal.

"It was disappointing to give away the penalty but overall it was probably a decent point.

"I thought we were on top after we didn't start the game well and played well in the middle part of the first half.

"When they get their goal, it gave them a lift. If we had gone in at half-time 1-0 up it would maybe have been different."
