THERE has been a mixed reaction to the news that Kenny Miller could be set to sign for Rangers this summer.

Some Light Blues fans think that, at 34, he is too old. They would like to see younger players brought in.

But personally I think bringing Miller back to Ibrox makes sense on so many levels.

First of all, he will not cost anything having negotiated a release from his deal with MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps.

And, by all accounts, he would be prepared to play for his boyhood heroes for a paltry wage. Kenny has made a good living for himself in the game. He will not be looking for much money.

Ally McCoist does not have much cash to play around with, so signing a proven performer on those terms must be appealing.

Kenny knows and understands the pressure he will be under at Rangers and has shown he can deal with it and score goals.

Ally needs to bring in players who can help get his side out of the SPFL Championship in the 2014/15 campaign. Kenny will do that.

I can understand why fans could maybe question whether his fitness and sharpness would be the same due to his age.

But Miller has always been a fine athlete. It was only last year that he scored a wonder goal for Scotland against England at Wembley.

Sure, supporters like to see kids getting their chance and they certainly have done at Ibrox in the last couple of seasons.

However, Rangers are under pressure to win every game and the team has to be built around experienced players.

If Ally's team lose or draw games then the pressure on him mounts. He needs experienced players like Miller.

He knows he can rely on the hitman.

I was slightly bit surprised when I heard Andy Little was one of the players being released.

Before Andy got injured in the game against Dunfermline last year I thought it was the best performance he had produced for the club in years.

On his day, when he is fully fit, he is a decent player. I also thought he was a good impact player coming off the bench.

But Ally has to get rid of five or six players if he wants to bring anybody else in.

With Andy being out of contract I can see his thinking. It is not as if the club needs to pay him off.

The other two boys to be told they can go, Chris Hegarty and Ross Perry, have been injured and have hardly featured.

I am sure there will be more departures to come.

Ally has to bring in players who are going to start. There is no point in him signing players who are going to sit on the bench.

His new recruits have to be ready to go straight into the side and do a job in the Championship. They have to his the ground running.

That is what the lads he has been linked with, the likes of Kris Boyd, Gavin Gunning, Shaun Hutchinson and Miller, will do if they come.

The new boys have to improve the side.

I was surprised when I saw that Andy had been at Rangers for eight years. He came over as a very young boy.

But he has never, apart from a spell in the Third Division last season, been a regular starter. I think a change of scene might do him the world of good.

The great thing about being let go is he could end up deciding where he is going to play next.

He could stay in Scotland, he could go down to England, he could move to the United States.

He is still a young man and will have no problem finding a new club.

A fresh start, away from the constant scrutiny Rangers are subjected to, may be just what he needs.

He is versatile too, can play on the left wing, the right wing, just off a front man or up top by himself.

Andy really has been a great servant to Rangers and I am sure we will hear more of him in the future.
