RANGERS made the trip to Cliftonhill with the league title and their first ever Treble in their sights having claimed the League Cup with victory over Raith Rovers in March and the Scottish Cup the previous weekend as they beat Clyde in front of a 120,000 crowd at Hampden.

The domestic clean sweep had never been completed before and Bill Struth's side ensured they would forever have their place in the history books, a comfortable win in Coatbridge seeing them pip Dundee to the title by just one point.

Legendary forward Willie Thornton netted a hat-trick to end the campaign in style while Jimmy Duncanson also found the target to confirm Rangers' status as the dominant team in the country.

Rangers were given a bye into the first round of the second-ever European Cup and were drawn against French side Nice, who had defeated Denmark's AGF Aarhus to reach this stage of the competition.

The night started badly for Scot Symon's side when the visitors took a 23rd minute lead but Max Murray levelled just before the break and the great Billy Simpson clinched the win with 10 minutes remaining. The victory was Rangers' first in European competition but not enough to get them through to the next round. They lost 2-1 in France and were then defeated 3-1 in the play-off game. Nice lost to the mighty Real Madrid in the next round.

A week after crowd trouble marred the Gers' 2-1 League Cup victory over their Old Firm rivals, Scot Symon's side went to Parkhead for a crucial league clash.

It was to turn into a day to remember for the Light Blues as they recorded their biggest-ever win at Parkhead. Alex Scott put Rangers ahead after just two minutes but it wasn't until the second half where the Gers really found their stride and hit the goal trail.

The legendary trio of Jimmy Millar, Ralph Brand and Davie Wilson were all on target before Harold Davis headed home a fifth late on.

The Hoops got a consolation in the dying seconds when Stevie Chalmers scored but it was Rangers' day to celebrate.

RESULT: Rangers 2 Werder Bremen 0.

After failing to reach the knock-out stages of the Champions League, Rangers embarked on what would turn out to be a memorable Uefa Cup run and caused shockwaves with a deserved triumph over the fancied Germans at Ibrox.

Bremen keeper Tim Wiese had a night to forget as he failed to deal with Daniel Cousin's long-range effort to gift Rangers the lead before Steven Davis doubled the Light Blues' advantage after another Cousin shot was parried into his path.

It was a typical European performance from Walter Smith's side as Werder succumbed to the Ibrox manager's astute tactical approach.

The two-goal cushion proved crucial as Rangers clinched a quarter-final berth the following week, despite losing 1-0 in the return leg in Germany.

GAME: Rangers v Dynamo Kiev.

Date: September 30, 1987.

Competition: European Cup.

Venue: Ibrox.

Attendance: 44,500.

Result: Rangers 2 Dynamo Kiev 0.

Ibrox roared Rangers to success as Graeme Souness' side overturned a first-leg defeat to book their place in the second round of the European Cup.

Few occasions have matched the atmosphere in the famous stands since this September night, with goals from Mark Falco and Ally McCoist proving the difference between the Gers and a Dynamo side which was one of the most respected in the competition and included future Ibrox stars Oleg Kuznetsov and Alexei Mikhailichenko.

Falco gave the hosts the lead midway through the first half after a howler from the Kiev keeper, before McCoist put Rangers in control with a header just after the break.

Rangers held on to their lead, with Souness playing a famous long-range pass-back to Chris Woods as the Light Blues set up a quarter-final tie with Steaua Bucharest.
