It's good to talk as Lawless seals Jags extension

As reported in SportTimes yesterday, the striker put pen-to-paper on a new one-year deal with the Firhill side.

Despite playing a starring role in Thistle's First Division title win, it was to prove a mixed campaign for the former Motherwell youngster as he struggled to hold down a regular first team place in the SPFL Premiership.

Lawless said: "I started the season fine and things were going well but the last six months were frustrating.

"I didn't play as often as I wanted to and it is hard when you are not in the team.

"Me and the gaffer spoke about it and I was pleased with how that went so I signed on again.

"We had to have a talk and it went really well. There has never been a falling out or anything like that.

"I just wanted to see where he was at. He told me the deal was still on the table but I hadn't been playing so it was good to get things sorted out."

Lawless has become the sixth Thistle star to agree fresh terms this summer as boss Archibald builds his squad for their second Premiership campaign.

He was the subject of a bid from Dutch side Willem II last summer and, despite being offered a new deal 12 months ago, held off signing on the dotted line until yesterday as he finally committed himself to the Jags.

Lawless said: "I wanted to go in and get it signed so there were no question marks over my future over the summer.

"I was tempted to sign on during the season but there were some things I had to get sorted, I have been really busy in the last couple of weeks so it was just getting a time where everyone was free and we could get it done.

"I had a few offers from up here, a few down in England and some from abroad as well but I wanted to stay at Thistle.

"It was a family decision, my wee one is only 10 months old, and I feel I have unfinished business at Thistle.

"It would have taken a lot for me to move away, I love playing for the club and we have got a great group of lads. That was always in my head."
