KRIS BOYD can help Rangers complete the final stage of the journey next season - by firing in 30 goals in the SPFL Championship.

That was the prediction from Light Blues legend Andy Goram today as he looked ahead to the challenge that awaits his former club.

Goram believes the second tier will be the most competitive league in Scottish football after Hibs joined Hearts and Rangers in it last month.

And he would dearly like to see Boyd reunited with his old Gers strike partner Kenny Miller at Ibrox in the 2014/15 campaign.

For "The Goalie" reckons the 30-year-old could supply the goals that mean Rangers win the Championship and a third consecutive promotion. Miller, who is a free agent after parting company with MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps, is keen to join his boyhood heroes for a third time.

However, the situation with Boyd, who scored 22 goals for struggling Premiership club Kilmarnock last term, is less clear. There is uncertainty over the immediate future of the Ibrox club due to a section of their support withholding their season ticket money.

But Goram, speaking to promote a match in aid of veterans charity Erskine between an Old Firm Legends side and the Royal Regiment of Scotland this Saturday, would like to see Boyd back.

He said: "Kris Boyd and Kenny Miller up front for Rangers next season would be the most potent strikeforce in the league.

"Nobody can tell me that if Kris Boyd played for Rangers next season he wouldn't score 30 goals He would guarantee the club 30 goals.

"People say it doesn't work when a player goes back to their old club. That is a lot of rubbish. It is a great idea if they can do you a turn and these guys can."

McCoist has offloaded Chris Hegarty, Andy Little and Ross Perry and is expected to tell other first team players they are surplus to requirements when he returns to work later this month.

Goram said: "Ally has to offload to get the players he wants in. When the chief exec said he will have the same budget that meant there is still no money to spend on transfer fees.

"It means the same budget wages wise. I don't know what is happening about Miller and Boyd.

"He has to work hard to get the squad in place that he wants for the SPFL Championship. But if he can freshen up and strengthen then I am sure he can get the club back into the top flight."

Meanwhile, Rangers will be entitled to a development fee from Dundee United for Charlie Telfer. The 18-year-old turned down the offer of a new contract from the Ibrox club to move to Tannadice.

No development fee has been agreed and if the two clubs cannot decide on a figure an independent panel will make a ruling.

Rangers have been linked with a move for Darren McGregor, whose contract with St Mirren has expired.
