Rangers ... the most memorable matches (20-16)

Game: Rangers v Aberdeen.

Date: May 11, 1991.

Competition: Scottish Premier Division.

Venue: Ibrox.

Attendance: 37,652.

Result: Rangers 2 Aberdeen 0.

MARK HATELEY wrote his name in the Ibrox history books as Rangers won the title on the final day to give Walter Smith his first championship as boss.

The Gers were cruising to three-in-a-row, but when Graeme Souness left to join Liverpool, Aberdeen, who where 10 points adrift with just seven games to go, closed the gap and headed to Glasgow only needing a point to lift the silverware.

It was to prove a dramatic and euphoric end to the campaign for Rangers, with Hateley, who joined from Monaco the previous summer, hitting both goals in a 2-0 win to deny the Dons and spark wild celebrations at Ibrox.

Game: Celtic v Rangers.

Date: May 4, 2002.

Competition: Scottish Cup.

Venue: Hampden.

Attendance: 51,138.

Result: Celtic 2 Rangers 3.

ONE of the most memorable Old Firm clashes in history ended in dramatic fashion as Rangers added the Scottish Cup to the League Cup they had collected earlier in the campaign under boss Dick Advocaat.

Goals from Peter Lovenkrands and Barry Ferguson twice pulled the Gers back into the tie after John Hartson and Bobo Balde had netted at Hampden.

The game looked to be heading for extra time, but Lovenkrands had other ideas, the Dane scoring an iconic derby goal to clinch the silverware as he headed home Neil McCann's cross in the last minute before wheeling away to party with the Light Blue legions.

Game: Hibernian v Rangers.

Date: May 22, 2005.

Competition: Scottish Premier League.

Venue: Easter Road.

Attendance: 17,450.

Result: Hibernian 0 Rangers 1.

THIS may not have been Rangers' greatest-ever performance, but it was to prove one of their most important wins as they clinched the title on Helicopter Sunday.

Alex McLeish's side went to Easter Road knowing that they had to win to have any chance of claiming the SPL crown, with Nacho Novo's second-half strike enough to get them the crucial three points.

The closing stages were played out in a sea of nerves from both teams before the away end erupted with the news that Motherwell had scored twice late on to beat Celtic and give McLeish his second last-day success.

Game: Celtic v Rangers.

Date: March 16, 1997.

Competition: Scottish Premier Division.

Venue: Parkhead.

Attendance: 49,929.

Result: Celtic 0 Rangers 1.

THE 90 minutes that all but clinched nine-in-a-row for Rangers and saw the famous Light Blue huddle in a searing Parkhead cauldron as tempers flared and boiled over.

Brian Laudrup netted the only goal of the game before the returning Mark Hateley saw red after an incident with Stewart Kerr, while Malky Mackay was dismissed for two yellow cards.

The final whistle saw Walter Smith's side celebrate in style but the day was marred by a mass brawl which started when Ian Ferguson and Paolo di Canio clashed.

One of the stormiest Old Firm fixtures in recent years but one to savour for the Light Blue legions.

Game: PSV Eindhoven v Rangers.

Date: November 1, 1978.

Competition: European Cup.

Venue: Philips Stadion.

Attendance: 29,000.

Result: PSV 2 Rangers 3.

BOBBY RUSSELL scored one of Rangers' most famous goals as John Greig's side shocked Europe by beating a classy PSV side.

Despite a poor start to the domestic campaign, goals from Alex MacDonald and Derek Johnstone had the Gers on course for a quarter-final berth.

But Russell would rewrite the history books, his curling finish at the end of an incisive Gers breakaway clinching a famous win.

It was to prove one of the finest results of Greig's tenure as boss as the side which won the Uefa Cup the previous year and contained several of the players who helped Holland to the World Cup final suffered their first home defeat in European competition.
