THE day a new hero emerged and a legendary career was kicked off as Rangers shocked their Old Firm rivals to lift the silverware at a packed Hampden.

The 1970 final was to prove the last time the League Cup would attract a six-figure crowd to the National Stadium, and it is fitting the game will be remembered for one of Rangers' most iconic goals as Derek Johnstone wrote his name in the history books.

SportTimes columnist DJ was just 16 when given the nod to start against Jock Stein's side but rose to the occasion, his bullet header from Willie Henderson's cross the only goal of the game as Rangers lifted the silverware.

The atmosphere was electric at Ibrox as Howard Wilkinson's side travelled to Glasgow to stun the Light Blue legions inside two minutes, Scotland international Gary McAllister giving the visitors a dream start.

It was to prove one of Rangers' finest nights, and comebacks, however, as they took a huge step towards a place in the third round.

John Lukic's own goal brought the Gers level before Ally McCoist hit the winner to set up a mouth-watering return leg at Elland Road.

Just two days after blowing their chance of lifting the title at Ibrox as they crashed to a 2-0 defeat to Motherwell, the Light Blues finally got over the line to match Celtic's period of domestic dominance.

Brian Laudrup got the only goal of the game at Tannadice, his powerful header being one of the most famous goals in the club's history.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations and the presentation an outpouring of emotion from skipper Richard Gough.

Alex Scott opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, but it was Ralph Brand's strike with just a few minutes remaining that was crucial for Scot Symon's side as they took a two-goal lead into the second leg at Molineux.

It was to prove one of the finest wins of Symon's time in charge, with a draw in the return leg enough to set up a final with Fiorentina.

With the game tied at 2-2 after goals from George Connelly, Kenny Dalglish, Alfie Conn and Derek Parlane, Tam Forsyth would emerge as the Light Blues hero.

After Derek Johnstone hit the post, Jaws was on hand to stab the ball over the line from just inches out.

Rangers took the Royal acclaim on a day which would prove crucial for recently-appointed manager Jock Wallace.
