CELTIC manager Ronny Deila will not be given millions to spend on players until he brings Champions League success to the club.

But the Norwegian does not feel envious of the smaller English clubs with much bigger budgets because "money is not everything" and he would always put team morale in front of money.

Deila has had to work under a far stricter signing policy than his predecessors and the days of Celtic splashing out £6million on a single player are, for the moment gone.

Dedryck Boyata has been signed for £1.5m, but when asked whether this would be a summer when Celtic would spend big, Deila said: “No, not now. That is too much money. A £5-£6milion move, I don’t think that will happen. Not this year. But if we get into the Champions League and earn money over a period of time, then, of course, things can be changed.

“Now it is about finding the right player in the category that we can afford.

“It’s not just the £6m we are talking about. What kind of salary is that player going to have? That would ruin the whole structure of the club. There has to be correlation between the salary and transfer fee.”

Deila would be forgiven for feeling more than a hint of frustration when he casts an eye south of the border when the team finishing bottom of the Premier League can earn close to £100m in a single season.

But Deila said: “I don’t think so much about that. I have been at a small club and now I am at a top club.

“Money is not everything. It’s about creating an environment where people get the best out of themselves.

“There is so much pressure and things going round a big club, so much politics.

“If things are going wrong you have to handle them and you see so many big clubs having problems because they have money and not good results.

“We have a very good advantage because of the size of the club here in Scotland.

“But elsewhere you see clubs with the same money as well. Salzburg has at least the same money as us so we have to fight against the same opponents, but with more money than we have.”

Deila proclaimed himself happy with the players he has and, while the club wants to add two more new faces, they will only move into the market for a player who will “make a difference” and not one to add to the squad numbers.

The Celtic boss said: “The players who won the league and had a good season will be the most important players going into the qualifiers.

“We got Dedryck Boyata in, and that was a good signing, someone we needed because we lost Jason Denayer.

“Do I expect to strengthen? You never know. My message is that the most important thing is consistency. You will never see five, six or seven signings by Celtic this year. I don’t think that would be right.

“We need to make the squad smaller. If we do add players then they have to be those who will make a difference, or young players we can develop over time.”
