MARK Warburton has made a good start to his bid to build an exciting Rangers team fans want to flock back to Ibrox to see – by signing two centre backs.

That was the claim by former Gers defender and captain Craig Moore today as he praised the quickfire captures of Rob Kiernan and Danny Wilson.

Warburton, the former Brentford boss who was appointed last week, brought in ex-Hearts captain Wilson on Tuesday on a free transfer.

He then landed former Republic of Ireland Under-21 cap Kiernan, who he worked with at Watford, from Wigan later the same day.

The new Light Blues gaffer’s team had a reputation for playing attacking and entertaining football during his time in charge at Griffin Park.

And he vowed that Rangers would produce a style of play which will encourage supporters to attend games in large numbers after he was unveiled.

The Glasgow giants have, along with their Old Firm rivals Celtic, made enquiries about skilful central midfielder Scott Allan as they prepare for the 2015/16 season.

But Nine-In-A-Row stopper Moore, who was this week appointed Football Operations Manager at Brisbane Roar in his native Australia, reckons Warburton is smart to build from the back.

He said: “Everyone is excited about the prospect of this guy playing attacking football and scoring goals.

"That is certainly the reputation he has. But signing centre backs first makes a lot of sense.

“As long as I have been involved in the game, managers have tried to build a strong spine to their teams.

“They look to bring in a reliable goalkeeper, dominant centre halves, strong midfielders and strikers up top who will score goals.

“But I think at times defending well and being able to cope well in one-on-one situations at the back has kind of been forgotten about in recent years.

“So, for me, this is a positive early sign that defending is important to him. If you can form a solid base at the back, defend well as a unit and keep clean sheets then you can build on that."

“I’ve felt sorry for the Rangers fans. I just think they’ve gone around in circles for three years. But now the club is in a situation where it can move forward and rebuild again.”

Moore has joined his old Australia team mate John Aloisi, the former Portsmouth and Coventry striker, at A-League club Brisbane Roar this week.

He said: “I’m interested in how a football club runs, how you can make an impact, how you can get ahead. It is something that really excites me. I have a great opportunity here.”

Moore's representative John Viola tipped the 52-times capped internationalist to help Brisbane achieve on and off-field success.

He said: “This guy is made for this job. He's been involved at every level of the game since he was seven. He is very articulate, bright and hard working and I know he’ll do well.”
