THE Old Firm have had many nail-biting encounters over the years, none more so than a Scottish Cup-tie at Parkhead in 1957...

R. GRAYSON (Glasgow) – Looking for details on a Scottish Cup match in 1957 between Celtic and Rangers which went to a replay and saw Celtic go through to the next round.

This match was a sixth-round Scottish Cup-tie at Parkhead which finished 4-4 on February 16, 1957, watched by a 55,000 crowd.

Celtic were leading 4-2 with seven minutes to go, but Rangers scored twice to make it 4-4 and take the game to a replay.

On February 20, 80,000 fans watched the replay at Ibrox and goals by Higgins and Mochan saw Celtic win 2-0 to progress to the next round.

T. WILKINS (Glasgow) – I am told that Forfar Athletic lost to Rangers in a penalty shoot-out in a Skol Cup-tie at Forfar in the 1980s. Can you confirm this and give some details.

On Tuesday, August 27, 1985, Rangers met Forfar in a Skol Cup match at Dens Park (note the venue) and the attendance was 7,282.

With 22 minutes to go, Forfar led 2-0, but on 69 minutes, Cooper scored with a penalty to make it 2-1 and seven minutes later Williamson equalised to make it 2-2.

After extra time it was still 2-2 and it went to penalties, and Forfar had the chance to win it, but missed a deciding penalty at 4-4.

Rangers went on to win the match 6-5 on penalties.

JOHNNY B GOODE (Glasgow) – Is it true that the England v Portugal World Cup semi-final in 1966 should actually have been played at Goodison?

This is indeed the case. The original schedule would have had England playing at Goodison in the semi-final if they topped their group.

This they did with two wins and a draw.

However, the Fifa organising committee reserved the right to change venues.

They probably decided to do this as Wembley’s capacity was much larger and the demand for tickets would be high from the host nation’s supporters.
