GLASGOW CITY will open a new chapter in their short and spectacularly successful history following the news that head coach Eddie Wolecki Black has left the eight-in-a-row Scottish champions.

Wolecki Black, whose appointment at a men's club is expected to be announced imminently, presided over a period of almost total City domestic domination.

Earlier this year he also led the Glasgow club to a first-ever women's Champions League quarter-final, and the split comes at the start of the SWPL's summer break.

City's next league game is not until July 26, when they face Celtic. Both club and head coach insist that the timing was right, having reached the conclusion that it was time for a parting of the ways.

Club manager Laura Montgomery said: "There's no big story behind this. It is something Cas (Carol Anne Stewart, the chairperson and co-founder) and I have been reviewing and discussing for some time.

"We felt the club needed a change, and Eddie also felt he needed a change. This was the perfect time to do it, before the second half of the SWPL season.

"In many ways it's ideal – we're all still good friends, the players are happy, so it was just a case of 'let's be sensible' and do this at a time that suits everybody."

Wolecki Black said: "My next destination will be announced very shortly. It will be in men's football.

"My only concern was to ensure that I left City in a good position. They are top of the league, have just retained the League Cup, and got through a difficult away tie in the Scottish Cup. They hold every trophy and are seeded eight in this year's Champions League."

City will formally advertise the post today, but Montgomery started receiving email applications almost as soon as Wolecki Black's departure was announced.

It is not known if assistant coach Donald Jennow will move as well, but the club manager said the rest of the backroom staff were committed to staying at the club.

"There will be continuity, so if necessary we will wait until after the league has restarted if it means getting the right person," she said.
