Former Rangers midfielder Alex MacDonald says Mark Warburton is right not to rush his Ibrox revolution.

The Englishman has so far made goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and defenders Danny Wilson and Rob Kiernan his first captures since taking charge at Gers last month.

But after the club axed 11 players following the collapse of last season's promotion bid, many supporters are anxious to see some attacking threat added to their team.

Former Derby battler John Eustace, 35, is currently training with Warburton's squad, while ex-Bradford midfielder Andy Halliday is also on trial.

But MacDonald – who won three league championships with the Light Blues during the 1970s – agrees with the fans who are looking for some forward-thinking recruits.

The 67-year-old played with some of the best Rangers wingers of all time after lining up alongside Willie Henderson, Willie Johnston and Davie Cooper, and believes Warburton must make pace down the flanks a priority.

However, he insists the former Brentford boss is right to take his time over adding to his squad.

MacDonald said: "I'm quite sure that Mark and big Davie Weir know who they want to get and when.

"They will have a wider range of knowledge when it comes to players having been involved down in England. That's really good.

"It's a bit of quality that we need. We need someone like a winger who can give us a bit of pace down the flanks.

"Without doubt, I think the Rangers supporters certainly need someone like that. Someone to excite them.

"It's about quality rather than quantity. It's better to get the right players in now than just signing up folk for the sake of it. At the end of the day you can always add players later on if you need extra cover, so long as the money is available.

"But I'm really looking forward to the season. It's going to be different to the last few years I think, totally different.

"I just hope the players are more on the same wavelength. Last year there were a few of them who were not on the same wavelength."

While Warburton continues to plan his rebuilding job, a number of the players released by the club after the humiliating 6-1 play-off final defeat to Motherwell have hit out at their treatment by the club.

Kris Boyd, Richard Foster and Ian Black have all complained that no-one from Ibrox bothered to tell them they were no longer required.

And MacDonald agreed they had right to feel aggrieved, saying: "I don't think it is the done thing.

"I was in football management for a long time and I always felt it was nice to tell people to their face.

"But everybody is different and not everybody in football these days will agree with that.

"The guys running the club now have got a lot on their hands, trying to attract players and sponsors."

MacDonald was speaking after helping to make the League Cup first-round draw that saw his old side land a home tie with Peterhead on August 1.

That tie comes just a week before Warburton kicks off his attempt to get Rangers promoted to the Ladbrokes Premiership.

And retired St Johnstone, Gers and Hearts midfielder MacDonald believes the cup clash is the ideal warm-up for the league campaign.

"When you play for Rangers, every game is a serious one," he said. "There are never any friendlies.

"But it will be good for Mark to have another home game to feel his way into the job. He'll get another chance to see the team performing and how their fitness levels are.

"The players will look forward to it as well. It is a bit of escapism from the league."
