ANNA BROGAN is dreaming of glory in the Wimbledon girls’ singles – but also aspires one day to cheer on her beloved Celtic in an Old Firm match.

The 17-year-old from Glasgow showed further signs of her potential with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Katarina Zavatska of Ukraine, which booked her place in the third round at SW19.

It came only a day after she shocked first seed Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic in the first round, an achievement recognised by both Andy Murray and Scottish swimming star Michael Jamieson.

The first British player to down a top seed in this competition since Laura Robson in 2008 – with whom she shares a coach in Mauricio Haddad – Brogan has been based in Bradenton, Florida, for the last 18 months.

She revealed after yesterday’s win that she is a Celtic fan who attempts to follow matches online, or is kept up to date with the scores by her brother Martin.

“My family were here again and when I walked on there was a bit of extra noise, that didn’t happen yesterday,” she said. “So maybe people had heard my result. Michael Jamieson tweeted me, too, so that was quite nice. When I was training in Bath I used to see him in the gym, but I was too shy to ever say anything to him.

“I have been out there in Florida for 18 months, and for sure, definitely I can see myself staying on there,” she added.

“We have looked at getting a place there, but it has not really happened. The weather makes a huge difference, playing outside, and you feel better.

"I like the coaches who I am working with out there and you look out the window in the morning and the sun is out and you are ready to go. It is brutal in the winter in Glasgow. You just want to hibernate.

“I’m not into American sport, none of that, baseball and American football, none of that. Celtic, that is the main thing. I am not actually that good at keeping in touch with their games, but I do go online sometimes, or my brother sometimes texts me.

"My dream is to go to an Old Firm match. I have still not managed to go to one. As a junior, having a win like that at Wimbledon is great to have in my pocket,” she added. “I know it is only the juniors, but it shows that no matter what happens in this tournament that I can come to Wimbledon, play well and win.”

Brogan is first up on Court 18 today against Russian Anastasia Potapova.

Maia Lumsden, of Bearsden, who had toppled the No.3 seed in the competition on Monday, wasn’t so fortunate. She was blown away by Tornado Black, the highly-rated American youngster, by a 6-1, 6-1 scoreline.
