Near misses in past Scottish Opens may have raised his domestic profile in a cruel way but even if there is some sympathy involved Marc Warren is enjoying the effect that has had.

The 34-year-old from Rutherglen suffered a heart-breaking finish in this event three years ago when three dropped shots in the last four holes took him from leading the tournament to missing out on the play-off.

Then last year he was tied going into the final round but got what he describes as a lesson in closing out a tournament from Justin Rose, his partner in the final pairing who claimed the title while Warren ultimately finished third.

“Definitely there's a little bit more attention this week than there has been previously,” he consequently acknowledged ahead of this year’s event which stats at Gullane tomorrow.

“I think hopefully come Thursday, there's quite a bit of support, but sometimes you enjoy that kind of side of it, good atmosphere when you're out on the golf course and hopefully that carries you along and helps you shave one or two shots off the score.”

Warren also revealed how his number one fan helped ease his suffering following that blown opportunity in 2012, at a time when he was battling to keep his European Tour card.

“It didn't affect me too much long term at Castle Stuart, because I had absolutely no doubts about myself under pressure,” he explained.

“When you come through a week like that and finish fifth in a good field when literally your job and livelihood is on the line.

“One of the many great things about that was that when I came home that night, my wife Laura opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate and she said, no matter what, you have got a job for next year.”

Last year’s performance meanwhile proved to be a platform for a surge to 65th in the world rankings, just one place behind Stephen Gallacher, so poised to become the top ranked Scot in the global game.

“It was a very important week in what was a good summer,” said Warren.

“You take huge confidence from that, a good, solid Sunday, where Justin just played better golf, came out on top.

“I felt as if I took a massive boost of confidence from that, and stood me in good stead for the rest of the season.”
