DAVID WEIR insists Rangers won’t rush into making signings this summer as boss Mark Warburton bids to bolster his Ibrox ranks.

The Light Blues have brought in three players – Danny Wilson, Rob Kiernan and Wes Foderingham – so far ahead of the new campaign and are also running the rule over Reece Wabara, John Eustace and Andy Halliday at present.

Rangers will play their first friendly of the summer against Tottenham Hotspur on Friday as they prepare to head to London for a training camp.

The clock is ticking to the big kick-off and the Petrofac Training Cup tie against Hibernian on July 25 before the League Cup clash with Peterhead the following weekend and Championship opener at home to St Mirren on August 8.

And assistant manager Weir insists the squad will only be added to again when the right players become available to strengthen Warburton’s hand this term.

He said: “I’m not sure about a flurry of activity, but we are working on getting players in. When we are at the stage when we’ve done it, we will talk about it then.

“That’s the way to conduct business. I don’t think you should be talking about other clubs’ players or signing targets before then.

“Mark and I know the type of players we like. We know how we want to play and the type of players who will fit that style of play.

“It is different playing for Rangers, though, and that’s why Danny Wilson was such a good signing for us. He’s done it before here and we know he can do it again.

“Sometimes it can be difficult playing for Rangers, so to get someone like that is a big help.”

Warburton and Weir were left with a huge rebuilding job on their hands this summer when they inherited a threadbare Ibrox squad last month.

The departures of a host players, including captain Lee McCulloch and striker Kris Boyd, left the Light Blue ranks short of numbers ahead of the new campaign.

And Weir is confident he and former Brentford boss Warburton will be able to make the right additions in the coming weeks.

He said: “I wouldn’t say we’re relaxed about it because it’s a really important part of the job.

“You need good players to be successful and we’re very clear on the fact we need to get new players in.

“But we don’t to speak about individuals who are not here at the moment. Until it’s done we won’t be speaking about anyone.

“We know there has to be additions but we want good quality additions and players who will help Rangers for a long time.

“Part of the reason we’ve got the job is perhaps we know a different market from the one Rangers may have been used to.

“We’ve been working in the Championship and we know that league well.

“That’s probably the market we are looking at but we’re conscious of making good decisions and doing our homework with regard to new signings.”

Rangers will play three bounce games before they make the trip to Easter Road later this month to begin a crucial campaign.

Boss Warburton will continue to monitor the progress of right back Wabara and midfielder Halliday, while former Derby star Eustace also has a chance to impress.

Weir said: “Ideally we want to see these guys in a match situation and that works both ways. They’ll want to have a look at us too.

“Hopefully we can have a look at them this week and we’ll take things from there.

“It can’t be an indefinite thing because the players coming here on trail are looking for a contract.

“But we need to make sure they are right for the club, we’ll judge them after a game.”
