MARK Warburton is set to strengthen his Rangers squad further today ahead of his first competitive match in charge by signing Wigan Athletic duo James Tavernier and Martyn Waghorn.

Warburton is keen to bring in both Tavernier, a right-back who spent last season on loan at Bristol City in League One in England, and Waghorn, a former England Under-21 striker.

The Ibrox club had an offer in the region of £125,000 rejected for Tavernier, the 23-year-old who is being targeted as a replacement for Richard Foster, last week.

However, an agreement has now been reached with the DW Stadium club, who were relegated from the Championship at the end of last season, for the defender and his Wigan team mate.

Rangers will take on Burnley in a pre-season friendly at Ibrox tomorrow night – the first time that supporters will have been able to see Warburton’s side play since the former Brentford manager was appointed last month.

They will then play Hibs, who are expected to be their main rivals for the Ladbrokes Championship in the coming season, in front of the BBC ALBA television cameras the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup at Easter Road on Saturday.

Warburton, who had already brought in Danny Wilson, Rob Kiernan, Wes Foderingham, Jordan Thompson and Tom Lang, made Andy Halliday his sixth signing since taking over as Rangers manager at the weekend.

Meanwhile, Jason Holt, the former Hearts midfielder who left Tynecastle at the end of last season after growing frustrated at the lack of first team opportunities available to him, will train with the Rangers squad again this week. However, there have been no contract talks with the 23-year-old midfielder.

Meanwhile, Stevie May, the former Scottish Young Player of the Year who has been linked with a return to his homeland to join Rangers, has stressed his determination to establish himself at Sheffield Wednesday this season.

Asked about the prospect of returning to Scotland to play for Rangers, May said: “I’m focused on one thing and that’s getting into the Sheffield Wednesday first XI on the first day of the season and progressing from there. That is all I have got on my mind.
