DEREK McINNES insists his team are savvy enough to realise their Euro mission is only half complete as Rijeka arrive at Pittodrie.

Aberdeen go into tonight’s Europa League second-round, second-leg qualifying tie holding a commanding 3-0 lead earned in Croatia last week in what was a huge result for the SPFL Premiership runners-up.

Goals from Andrew Considine, Peter Pawlett and former St Mirren star Kenny McLean mean Matjaz Kek’s men need to score three without conceding just to force extra time in the Granite City.

But while the bookies have Aberdeen as 1/33 favourites still to qualify, McInnes knows his team will not be taking any chances by going into the game with their minds already on the next round.

He said: “That message comes from me, but they are smart enough and intelligent enough to know that themselves.

“Like any team who have the quality Rijeka have, we have still got to produce a performance and do what we did last week all over again.

“Domestically, we have always tried to show our supporters an Aberdeen side on the front foot, but that can’t always happen in European football.

“I anticipate Rijeka might be doing something a wee bit different tonight, so we may need to do the same.”

McInnes welcomes back former Celt Barry Robson after the midfielder recovered from an ankle knock sustained last week in Rijeka.

His influence could be crucial as the Dons prepare for a potential early blitz as their opponents chase a lifeline, but their gaffer remains confident in his team’s ability to see the game out.

He said: “They have been a successful team over the last few seasons and their approach will be to go all out for an early goal, but for any game at home we have to try and impose ourselves.”

The winners face a trip to either Kazakhstan or Armenia in the third qualifying round; Kairat of Kazakhstan hold a 3-0 advantage from their first leg against Alashkert, the conquerors of St Johnstone in the first round earlier this month.
