GLASGOW swimmer Andrew Mullen says the memories of 2012 came flooding back after he graced the London Aquatics Centre once again for National Paralympic Day.

Since his exploits at the Paralympics in 2012, the 18-year-old has racked up a host of medals, including four European golds in 2014 and most recently two world silvers and two bronze in Glasgow.

He was on form once again as he took victory at National Paralympic Day – winning both the 50m and 200m S5 freestyle races.

And, while he thought the crowd wouldn't affect him on Sunday, he says the support on show in the capital was overwhelming.

“I'm really happy to have the chance to race in front of this crowd and be able to put on a good performance,” he said.

“I'm really honoured to have the chance to compete here with the amazing crowd watching on and supporting us.

“I didn't think the crowd would get to me, but when I came out for my first swim all the memories started coming back from London and it's just so nice to be back here.

“I felt a bit tired when I got here, but as soon as I arrived and warmed up and saw how busy it was, it got me so excited for racing.”

National Paralympic Day is an annual event designed to help continue the legacy of the 2012 Games with elite athletics also going on at the Olympic Stadium.

And Mullen believes the event is crucial for maintaining the momentum created three years ago.

“I love racing and crowds like this make it extra special, so this will be something that I always remember for the rest of my life,” he added.

“I think National Paralympic Day encompasses everything that is great about the Paralympics. It's a great movement and I think everyone can benefit from taking part in it where you are competing or are a spectator.

“It's a great thing to be a part of and three years after the games it really shows that the legacy is living on and I'm so pleased that so many came out to watch.

“It's a super exciting time for us and we will be back training for Rio and everyone is excited to see how fast we can go and how well we can do out there.”
