RANGERS have had many memorable European nights over the years, but had a disappointing exit in the Uefa Cup during the 1985-86 season.

ROBERT SMITH (Govan) – In the season before Graeme Souness took over as Rangers manager, were the Gers playing in Europe?

Graeme Souness actually took over as Rangers boss at the very end of the 1985-86 season. In that season they played in the Uefa Cup, but were eliminated in the first round by Osasuna of Spain on a 2-1 aggregate.

JOHN GARRITY (Greenock) – Can you give me a run-down of the early career of Alan Brazil, the radio presenter? Did he play for any top Scottish clubs before he went south? Did he score any hat-tricks for his clubs?

Alan Brazil played for Celtic Boys’ Club before signing for Ipswich Town in 1977.

A Scotland Youth, Under-21, and full international, Brazil never played any club football in Scotland.

Brazil was a big success at Ipswich, scoring 80 goals, five coming in the same match against Southampton in 1982.

This included a hat-trick in the space of five minutes in the first half.

Brazil later earned big-money transfers to Spurs and Manchester United, but could not repeat his Ipswich form.

A serious back injury ended his career after spells at Coventry and QPR.

GEORGE BRENNAN (Maybole) – Can you give me information about the career of Aberdonian Alex Dawson, who became a regular in the Manchester United team following the Munich air disaster in 1958?

Alex Dawson was a robust, old-fashioned centre-forward, who signed for Manchester United in 1957, having played six times for England Schoolboys in 1954-55.

He was introduced to United’s first team in April 1957. He scored in each of the final three games of that season, helping United win the championship.

He took his place in the first team after the Munich air disaster.

Remarkably, he was the youngest post-war player to score a hat-trick, being 18 years and 33 days when he scored three in the FA Cup semi-final replay against Fulham at Highbury on March 26, 1958, United winning 5-3.

When David Herd arrived at United in 1961, Alex moved to Preston North End, followed by spells at Bury, Brighton and Hove Albion, Brentford and Corby Town.

His career aggregate was 212 league goals in 394 appearances.
