DANNY WILSON is determined to lead by example at Rangers this season – even if he is not wearing the Light Blues armband.

Defensive partner Lee Wallace was captain for the recent friendly against Burnley and led Mark Warburton’s side to a 6-2 win over Hibs last weekend as the Gers kicked off their campaign in stunning style.

Wallace joined the skippers of the 41 other SPFL clubs at Hampden yesterday for the traditional pre-season picture ahead of the start of the new Ladbrokes Premiership campaign and League Cup ties this weekend.

And Wilson, who guided Hearts to the Championship title last season before clinching a return to Ibrox earlier this summer, insists he will be the same player with or without the armband this term.

He said: “It doesn’t make much difference to me. When I came here and people asked me about the captaincy I always said that I would try to help whoever was captain because I know it’s not always easy.

“I don’t feel any different, I try to be responsible on the pitch and I enjoy responsibility but whether that is as captain or not doesn’t make a big difference to me.

“You want eleven captains on the pitch but it doesn’t always work like that.

“However, it’s important there are players who can help out and take responsibility and I’m one of them. It’s something I’m enjoying.

“Lee’s the captain and he’s doing a good job but it’s important other players help him and I think we’re trying to do that.

“I don’t view the captaincy as something I’m missing but we’ve only played one game so I can’t really discuss the differences.”

After a summer that has seen new boss Warburton overhaul his Ibrox squad, Wallace was the only player from last season to a start in the Gers’ defensive line at Easter Road seven days ago.

Right-back James Tavernier marked his debut with a superb free-kick while Wilson partnered former Wigan stopper Rob Kiernan at the heart of the back four.

And the 23-year-old is confident the new look rearguard will only get better with time as they bid for a second successive cup triumph when they face Peterhead tomorrow.

Wilson said: “It’s a new defence and it will take time.

“We’d only had a couple of games together before last week and even then there had been a lot of substitutions.

“The relationships will get stronger as we go on.

“We’re building new relationships all over the park and we’re not there just yet.

“The passing from back to middle has to be better and we’ve spoken about that.

“There is a long way to go because as a defender I wasn’t happy at losing two goals last week.

“We’ve gone over things and hopefully we’ll be better at the weekend.”
