There were contrasting fortunes for the Young brothers in the first round of the League Cup on Saturday.

Darren Young’s Albion Rovers side went down to a 3-0 defeat against Raith Rovers at Starks Park, whilst brother Derek was on target as Forfar knocked out Queen’s Park at Hampden.

Lewis Vaughan got the opening goal for Raith Rovers from the penalty spot early on, the second spot-kick that Albion have conceded in as many weeks.

Kyle Benedictus added a second before half-time, and Rory McKeown had the game wrapped up for Ray McKinnon’s side before the hour-mark.

Forfar ran out 2-0 winners against Gus MacPherson’s Queens Park. Young’s early goal was added to by Danny Denholm as he followed in to convert the rebound after William Muir had saved Martyn Fotheringham’s penalty.

Morton progressed to the next round in convincing fashion with a second-half demolition of League Two side Elgin City at Cappielow.

Denny Johnstone scored on his debut in a win that perhaps flattered the home side a little after a laboured display in the opening period.

Stefan McCluskey tapped home just after the break to set Morton on their way, but home keeper Derek Gaston was forced to make a spectacular one-handed save from Brian Cameron’s effort to deny Elgin an equaliser, before on-loan Birmingham striker Johnstone added a second.

Two goals from the impressive Jon Scullion and a late penalty from Ross Forbes put a nice sheen on the scoreline for Jim Duffy’s men, as he got the morale-boosting victory he had called for prior to the game.

His side will now be looking to take that momentum into a difficult opening set of fixtures in their first season back in the Championship, having Falkirk, Hibs and St Mirren in their first three games.
