MARK WARBURTON is confident there is plenty more to come from Rangers after they got their title bid off to a winning start against St Mirren last night.

A Lee Wallace double and a late strike from Dean Shiels clinched a 3-1 win for the Light Blues at Ibrox as Warburton recorded a third straight win as boss.

After seeing his side beat Hibernian and Peterhead on cup duty in recent weeks, there were more reasons to be cheerful for Warburton as they saw off the Saints on the opening night of Ladbrokes Championship action.

And the Ibrox boss is hopeful his side can continue improving as attentions turn to the trip to Alloa next weekend.

Warburton said: “The result was pleasing, the backing of the crowd was pleasing and it was an outstanding support from the fans.

“We dominated possession, but we have to recognise that we have to be more clinical.

“In the second half, we had chance after chance and 2-1 is a dangerous score line.

“They broke a couple of times when we were loose and it is fine margins, it could have been a different game.

“I thought, overall, we deserved to win but we have got to take our chances.

“We are six weeks in. We met for the first time on June 27, so we are far from the finished article and there is a lot more to come from this group of players.

“With their work ethic and their ability, we will get better and better.

“It is about bedding in and getting ideas, but they have been first-class to work with and I thought we deserved the victory.

“We pushed forward and it is about recognising pitch geography and keeping good pitch geography. There were a couple of times we were loose.

“If we don’t take care in possession, we can get punished at the moment. But that will improve as we go ahead in the next two or three weeks.

“We are in good shape. We have come through three games now and had three good victories and we will look forward to the next game.”

Rangers may have been deserved winners on the night, but their profligacy in front of goal could have cost them as Cameron Howieson pulled a goal back for Ian Murray’s side and Steven Thompson fired a penalty over the bar.

Wallace’s two first-half strikes were enough to give Rangers the edge and Warburton was delighted with a superb showing from the man who wore the Light Blues armband once again.

He said: “He was magnificent tonight, Lee. It was an outstanding performance. From the first day of training, he has been that way.

“He was frustrated with himself for not scoring a couple last week, but he got his rewards tonight and I thought it was a first-class left-back performance.

“You have to have leaders on the pitch and Lee gets on with the game. He is focused, he is driven and he leads by example.”
