JAMES TAVERNIER’S sensational impact in Mark Warburton’s Rangers shows no sign of waning as he produced another top drawer performance in a five-star show.

The former Wigan full-back – whose previous best for a season is five goals - might have had a hat-trick in a terrific performance overall.

He shot Rangers on the road to victory, but Kenny Miller pinched a second goal and Tavernier also had an effort ruled out for offside two minutes from the end of a decidedly one-sided contest.

In the end Miller scored twice on his first start of the campaign, Martyn Waghorn netted a penalty and Jason Holt also scored in a comfortable win.

He said: “I should have had a hat-trick, but I am happy for Kenny to get two goals. I'll take two assists for Kenny.

"There were different words in the changing room. The second one was definitely going in and would have given me two but Kenny helped it over the line. It happens in football and I am just happy for the team.

"We have scored a lot of goals and we have got to keep working hard to keep clean sheets and go from there.

"I didn't feel like I was offside at the end - I will have to have look at it.

"Five is my best tally and hopefully I can beat that and hopefully set up as many goals as I can for the lads. I want to be a part of a great season.”

Rangers’ opening goal in just four minutes was indicative of the type of play that Warburton has been impressing on his players since arriving in the summer.

It was all about pace and precision and Alloa were simply unable to cope with the slickness of it all.

Kenny Miller started it the move with a burst of pace from the left side and a quick pass to Nicky Law.

With speed of thought, Law found a yard of space by letting the ball go across him and threaded the perfect pass for Tavernier who smashed a right-foot shot past the defenceless Andy McNeil.

That’s three for the season already for the over-lapping full-back who has been a standout performer and was again at the heart of everything Rangers did well yesterday.

He offers a terrific threat on the ball on the right side but seems equally adept when asked to carry out defensive duties and he did not have too many of them at the Indodrill Stadium.

In fairness, Alloa’s equaliser in seven minutes was of similar quality and it gave the home supporters hope that if Michael Chopra can reproduce on a regular basis they will survive in the Championship.

The Rangers defenders were looking for an offside flag when Graeme Holmes chipped the ball into the box and Chopra let the ball drop over his shoulder before smashing a sensational volley past Wes Foderingham.

It was only a blip for Rangers in the grand scheme of things as they had the points wrapped up by half-time.

They were ahead in nine minutes when goal architect Holmes tripped Jason Holt in the box and Martyn Waghorn made no mistake from the spot.

The former Wigan striker struck the underside of the bar in 18 minutes after being set up by Miller who also struck the woodwork 10 minutes later, catching the outside of the right post after Barrie McKay had created the chance.

Alloa’s resistance was broken before half-time when Holt netted the third goal in 39 minutes, following up after Lee Wallace’s right foot shot had been spilled by McNeil.

Then Miller grabbed his customary back post goal two minutes before the break, converting Tavernier’s low cross, and promptly did it again five minutes from time.

It seems to be the veteran striker’s goal of choice this season having notched similar efforts against Hibs and Peterhead.

Warburton gave him the full 90 minutes which seemed the right thing to do given he missed the opening league match against St Mirren through suspension.

The 35-year-old frontman had insisted in a Times Sport exclusive on Saturday that he wants to be a regular and on this form it will be difficult for Warburton to leave him out.

Instead he rested McKay and Waghorn, bringing on Nathan Oduwa, for first taste of the action, and Nicky Clark while Dean Shiels also got the last half-hour as a replacement for Law.

Perhaps understandably there was a drop in Rangers’ tempo in the second half as the game was already won but they still bossed possession and created openings.

Tavernier might have been better passing on a couple of occasions instead of shooting but it mattered little.

They did find a fifth goal five minutes from time and then had two disallowed for offside!

It was Oduwa who was involved as he baffled the Alloa defenders on the left and cut the ball across the face of goal.

Tavernier hammered it back in and Miller was virtually ion the line as he knocked the ball into the net.

TV pictures seemed to show he was offside but assistant Martin McCarthy then wrongly flagged Tavernier three minutes later when he finished off another dazzling Oduwa moved.

Clark had the ball in the net too in injury time but it seemed McCarthy was correct in ruling him offside.

Rangers were back to the top of the table on goal difference and now move on to Ayr on Wednesday night where they will seek to progress in the Petrofac Cup.
