MARK WARBURTON is confident his free-flowing Rangers side don’t need a Plan B in the final third this season.

The Light Blues have netted 17 goals in their first four competitive fixtures so far this term as they have seen off Hibernian, Peterhead, St Mirren and Alloa on league and cup duty.

Many of the strikes have come at the end of easy on the eye attacking moves as the new style Warburton has implemented at Ibrox has shone through in recent weeks.

It is a far different approach from the one that has been utilised over the last few campaigns and Rangers have yet to score a headed goal on Warburton’s watch.

But the Gers boss is delighted with the way his quick and incisive attacking line are operating as they look to continue their scoring spree against Ayr United tomorrow night.

Warburton said: “If you’ve got a Peter Crouch style target man and you’ve got world class delivery then I understand perfectly. We haven’t got that but we’ve got some very talented attacking players

“Last season at Brentford we had very small players – 5ft 6, 5ft 7 – so there was no point in throwing the ball into the box.

“Teams against Rangers will look to condense the area and look to defend the penalty box so what’s the point in us throwing the ball in?

“If we’ve got good possession up to the final third we’ve got to be better than throwing a hopeful ball in.

“We have to be clever, keep shifting the ball and find an opening.

“It was challenging on the surface (at Alloa) but I keep saying every day that we have to show patience. If we can do that we will be alright.

“No [I am not looking for a target man]. I understand why you might say that.

“Martyn Waghorn’s been outstanding, Nicky Clark has done everything asked of him and came on and did a great job.

“Kenny Miller can play anywhere across the front, Nathan can play down the middle and Nicky Law and Jason Holt are getting forward so we’ve got options and II think we’re OK attacking-wise.”

Rangers fans have been wowed by Warburton way so far this term as they have seen their side hit the goal trail and turn on the style with four impressive victories.

Keeper Wes Foderingham has played his part in an attacking sense as Rangers look to play out from defence and build from the back.

And Warburton is pleased to see his philosophy paying off as every member of his side buys into his Ibrox blue print.

He said: “I’m really delighted with Wes. I can’t speak highly enough of his contribution.

“I see people criticising him but he’s been asked to play out from the back and get us started.

“I think he’s been outstanding. He’d one save yesterday from a free-kick which was his fifth save in four games.

“The stats I looked at were that Wes played out 87 per cent of the time [on Sunday] and we got started in their half 77 per cent of the time from that.

“These are big numbers. Against St Mirren, it was 74 and 88 respectively. It lets us keep the ball in their half.

“If our keeper launches the ball and it’s a 50 / 50 battle, that’s not for us.

“We’ve got to be clever and look for ways of getting out. I can’t speak highly enough of his contribution. It’s been first class.”
