SHETTLESTON ace Scott Anson is a typical all-action bustling striker type who has never does anything half-hearted.

So Town gaffer Hugh Kelly's idea of regarding the Euroscot Eng League Cup section games as simply a means to building fitness levels ahead of their first-ever Super Premier Division campaign does not sit easy with the hitman’s all-or- nothing approach.

Scott insists he is “in it to win it “and not surprisingly is fired up ahead of tonight’s potential Section Three decider when Shettleston make the short hop to face Petershill.

“A lot of hard work and effort has got us into a position to more or less secure a plum quarter-final clash against Pollok so we really have to give it our all tonight,” he said.

“Petershill will be strong favourites, but we showed in playing with just nine men for fully 45 minutes in our win over Bellshill last weekend that our dressing room isn’t lacking for battling spirit.

“Every single player put in a shift to get us a 2-1 victory and that in itself is encouraging because more of the same will be needed through in Springburn.”

Rikky McIntosh and Paul Martin’s red cards won’t prevent them from being eligible for selection tonight.

Which is just as well as manager Kelly has revealed full-back Ross Dickson as a major injury doubt while Chrissy McCormack is still serving out a ban for being sent off in a pre-season friendly match up at St Andrews United.

The team boss, who is himself subject to a report following last Saturday’s contest, said: "Ryan Frances was dismissed in the same friendly game. however he is back in contention for a jersey tonight.

"Our biggest worry, though, surrounds the availability of goalkeeper Bryn Halliwell and it would certainly give our defence a lift if he is between the posts for a game of this importance.

He added: “A few of the guys have their sights set on picking up early-season silverware, but I am more concerned with seeing how we match up against Super Premier opposition as it will afford us a good gauge as to where we need to be for the season ahead.”

Free-scoring Petershill - they netted nine against Thorniewood United - are in confident mood going into the clash, not least because the playing riches at gaffer Willie Patterson’s disposal enables him to recall feared marksman Stephen McGladrigan after resting him at the weekend.

The Peasy boss admitted: “We’ve more to be happy about than not, however we’ve had Shettleston watched on two occasions and expect them to provide a more testing examination than what we’ve received up to now...no disrespect intended.

“Glad had been feeling an abductor injury and was left out as a precaution but he will come back into our thoughts as his pace and movement can make the most of the openings being created by Chris Craig, who has excelled since arriving from Kilbirnie Ladeside.

“Jamie Brough and Fraser Chisholm are another couple of newcomers to have caught the eye while Tony Stevenston from among our old guard has likewise started the season well and scored a goal of the season contender against Thorniewood.

“There’s an edge and competitiveness among the players that is very encouraging but trophies are never handed out in August and we have to show ourselves capable of achieving the same consistency as the Auchinlecks and Hurlfords of this world."

In other crunch Euroscot Eng Sectional Cup encounters taking place tonight, Neilston will be going all out to overcome near neighbours Arthurlie and set up a potential Section Five decider at home to frontrunners Pollok on Saturday.

Reigning trophy holders Cumbernauld United will relinquish their claim to the silverware if Rob Roy return unbeaten from their trip to meet Kilsyth Rangers at Duncansfield to clinch a last eight showdown against Section Six kingpins Clydebank.

And the Euroscot Eng beaten finalists from last time out - Blantyre Vics – will also be staring elimination in the face if Ian Currie’s revamped Vale of Clyde make it three wins out of three when hosting the visit of Rutherglen Glencairn.

The Tin Pail's reward would be a knockout stages trip to meet the winners of Section Seven – looking like Greenock particularly if Marty Campbell’s men get the better of derby rivals Potrt Glasgow tonight.

Junior new boys Gartcairn must overcome Shotts Bon Accord at Hannah Park in order to head off the challenge of Carluke Rovers and Newmains United atop the Section Two pile and attempt to earn home advantage in the quarter-finals against whoever comes through as Section One top dog from Lesmahagow, Larkhall Thistle and Lanark United.

Matters are even less clear-cut in the Ardagh Glass Cup stakes where all sorts of ifs and buts similarly prevail.

However, a win for Glenafton at home to Lugar Boswell will almost certainly ensure the cup holders and Auchinleck Talbot, losing finalists from last season, will be in the last eight again.

And bookmakers odds point towards Kilbirnie Ladeside, Troon, Hurlford United, Irvine Meadow, joining them along with Beith or Kilwinning Rangers and not forgetting Girvan or Whitletts Vics.
