COLIN STEIN became an instant hero with Rangers fans with his goal-scoring exploits when he joined the club, but he made the headlines for the wrong reasons the season before when playing for Hibernian at Ibrox in 1967…

OLD BLUE (East Kilbride) Is my memory deserting me, or is it true that Colin Stein was sent off at Ibrox whilst playing for Hibs. This was shortly before his move to Rangers.

Your memory is fine. On November 25, 1967, Rangers defeated Hibs 2-0 in a game full of niggly, petty fouls.

Early in the second half the two centre-forwards, Stein of Hibs and Alex Ferguson of Rangers, were sent off for fighting.

John Greig (penalty) and Alex Willoughby scored the Gers goals. The following season Colin Stein became the first player to be transferred between two Scottish clubs for £100,000, when he left Hibs for Ibrox.

JOHN (Erskine) My English uncle told me that his Carlisle United team, from the English Second Division, beat Celtic in the same season that Celtic reached their second European Cup Final. Is he pulling my leg?

Your uncle is right. On August 2, 1969, Celtic travelled to Carlisle’s Brunton Park.

Carlisle won the game 1-0 with a tremendous goal from 20 yards by Tommy Murray, the former Airdrieonians player.

The Celtic team that day was: Simpson, Hay, Gemmell, Murdoch, McNeill, Clark, Hughes, Hood, Wallace, Callaghan and Lennox.

ROBERT (Aberdeen) Could you give me details of a testimonial for the Aberdeen player John McMaster? I think the Dons played an All Star Select.

This game took place on Monday, December 16, 1985. It was billed as Aberdeen versus a Billy McNeill Select.

The teams were Aberdeen: Gunn, McKimmie, McMaster, Stark, McLeish, W. Miller, Black, Angus, McDougall, Cooper, Weir. Substitutes: Wright, Porteous, J. Miller, Gray, Mitchell.

Select: Goram (Oldham), Nicol (Liverpool), Rougvie (Chelsea), Phillips (Manchester City), Clements (Manchester City), Hansen (Liverpool), Dalglish (Liverpool), Strachan (Manchester United), McGhee (Celtic), Olsen (Manchester United).

Substitutes: Power (Manchester City), Nicholas (Arsenal).

Jesper Olsen put the Select ahead, but Aberdeen equalised through Frank McDougall.

Frank McAvennie and Dave Phillips scored a goal each to ensure a 3-1 victory for the Select.

Sadly, McMaster missed a penalty on his big night. A crowd of 16,000 attended.
