ALEX MACDONALD reckons Rangers will fear nobody in cup competitions as they set their sights on knock-out success this season.

Mark Warburton’s side clinched their sixth straight win with a 1-0 triumph over Hibernian on Sunday as they moved back to the top of the Championship standings.

A clash with Queen of the South – the only other side to take maximum points from the first three league fixtures – is on the cards this weekend.

But it is the League Cup tie with Airdrie tomorrow night that is top of the Gers’ agenda as they look to book their place in the third round.

Clinching the second tier crown and winning promotion back to the Premiership is the main aim for Warburton and his side this season.

But former Light Blue hero MacDonald is confident their style and mentality can stand them in good stead in any competition in the coming months.

He said: “Every game is important for Rangers, that is the attitude of the supporters and it has to be for the players. Rangers don’t play meaningless games.

“I think they will do well in the cups this season. The movement is brilliant and everyone is attacking, it is great to watch.

“Obviously, everyone wants to win, and at Rangers you have to win. But the crowd are loving the way that the team are winning just now.

“The fans want to look forward to going to games and the team now has players that are entertaining to watch. You can feel the atmosphere and the difference amongst the fans.

“The way they are playing, I don’t think anyone will worry them. The more games and cup ties we play, the better the team is going to gel together.

“Already they look as though they have been together for a couple of years. They have got a lot of pace and potential. They are playing for the jersey as well.

“It doesn’t matter if it is the Championship or any of the cups, everyone expects Rangers to win.

“With the way they are playing, you would expect them to win again on Wednesday night.”

Rangers have already enjoyed cup success this season as they have seen off Hibernian, Peterhead and Ayr United in knock-out action in recent weeks.

The trip to New Broomfield is another tricky tie for Warburton’s side to negotiate as they look to avoid a shock and their first defeat of the campaign.

MacDonald enjoyed huge success in the Lanarkshire dugout and the former Diamonds boss knows Gary Bollan’s side will be determined to write their name in the history books.

He said: “When I was there, you looked forward to games like this.

“You want to test your ability against the best teams and best players. It is difficult for Rangers going there, and going back to an Astroturf park again.

“The team I had at Airdrie had a tremendous attitude, they were fit and they had a really good team spirit.

“Every game is different and there will be guys there that are confident they can go out and beat Rangers.

“But Rangers have that winning mentality as well and on form they should win the game.”
