Paisley veteran Stephen McAllister reckons playing with the youngsters on the Tartan Tour can help him make his mark among the golden oldies in this week’s Scottish Senior Open.

The 53-year-old began his challenge at Archerfield Links in East Lothian with a one-under 71 to sit just a shot off the pace set by Australia’s Peter O’Malley and English duo David J Russell and Gary Marks.

McAllister has played only two events on the European Senior Tour this season but has kept his game sharp on the domestic PGA scene.

The two-time European Tour champ said: “I’m fortunate that I can still play the Tartan Tour and we are lucky in Scotland that we have all the Pro-Ams.

“Playing against some of the younger members of the Tartan Tour certainly helps to keep your competitive edge sharp.”

At the head of the field, Russell, who designed the Fidra Links that is staging this week’s 54-hole showpiece, conjured an eagle on his second hole to move into a three-way tie at the top.

He said: “I’ve been here for 14 years but this was my first competitive strokeplay round on it. It was slightly strange and the nerves were a bit funny.”
