LEE WALLACE may not be out of reach of a Scotland call-up if he maintains his impressive start to the season at Rangers.

That was the view of Scotland coach and former Gers boss Stuart McCall ahead of this weekend’s double header against Georgia and Germany.

Wallace has been one of the stars of Mark Warburton’s team as they have surged to the top of the Ladbrokes Championship, including netting twice against St Mirren and helping his side keep four clean sheets across the league and League Cup.

The left-back has been capped eight times by his country, with the last occasion coming in September 2013 in a 2-1 win away to Macedonia when Gordon Strachan brought him on as a late substitute.

The debate of picking players from the lower leagues in Scotland has been debated at length in recent years, particularly concerning Wallace since Rangers dropped down the divisions.

And while he is not involved in the current squad, McCall admits the man recently named as Ibrox captain, who hobbled off with a knee knock during Sunday's 5-1 win at Queen of the South, could be called up if his performances in light blue continue to impress.

He said: “As a staff before the squad is announced we go through numerous names, then try and whittle it down into the way the manager wants it to be shaped.

“Lee comes into that category. Obviously [Graeme] Shinnie is another left-back.

“You have Andy Robertson and Craig Forsyth both playing at clubs with ambitions of going into the Premier League. They are at top Championship clubs and they are playing to a good standard.

“Charlie Mulgrew can fill in at left-back, but again, like anyone - and Lee falls into this category - if you are playing consistently well then you can’t ignore people like that.

“I’ve been impressed with him this season. He came off on Sunday having aggravated a wee knee injury on that surface [at Palmerston] but he’s started the season well.

“Like a lot of full-backs these days, his strength is going forward. That’s what is eye-catching. You see it in England and Scotland with players in that position, the best seem to be attacking and Lee is in that category.”
