TWO of Glasgow's oldest surviving Junior clubs will meet in this season’s Euroscot Eng Sectional League Cup Final following a night of tense and dramatic semi-final action.

Vale of Clyde survived a late collapse to make it into their first cup final in fully 25 years with a 4-2 penalty-kick shoot-out triumph over brave Wishaw following a regulation time 2-2 stalemate.

And the lottery of penalty-kicks was also required out at Guys Meadow where Petershill goalkeeper Steven McNeil’s heroics … he saved a total of four penalty kicks in the game …saw the Springburn outfit win 3-1 against Rob Roy on the back of the Super Premier Division rivals fighting out a pulsating 1-1 draw.

It must have felt like the most painful of injury times for Tin Pail gaffer Ian Currie at Fullarton Park where he could have been excused for thinking his playing charges were home and dry when leading 2-0 with just one minute left on the clock.

Ryan Connolly’s opportunistic first-half volley following a bout of sustained Vale pressure and a deft Gavin Ross dink over Wishy goalkeeper Sandy Thomson midway through the second half appeared to have sealed a historic last-four victory.

However, the Lanarkshire side were not for giving up the cause just yet even though a hopeful ball flung into the penalty area and gloriously headed home by Ross McGeachie appeared to have afforded Chris McGroarty’s men a consolation score rather than a lifeline.

However, whistler Graham Grainger’s decision to play fully five minutes injury-time acted to keep the pitch action simmering on the boil and with the Vale defence sitting deep, another all-or-nothing cross ball with just seconds left to play was converted by substitute Vinny McGuire to spark wild scenes of celebration among visiting players and supporters alike.

But their euphoria was short lived as good fortune deserted them from the 12-yard mark with firstly K.B. Grant missing the target and Michael Collinder’s effort was saved by “spot-kicks” expert Jon Connolly, while the home team netted their four attempts.

Currie admitted: “We made it extra hard for ourselves by not putting away our chances early doors because a 3-0 scoreline at half-time would have been a better reflection on how things had gone.

“At 2-0 it looked all over bar the shouting but then the referee takes it upon himself to find five minutes of added-on time which only he can explain.

“Thankfully we scraped by and can now look forward to a cup final appearance which is fantastic for a club like ours.”

Petershill supporters must have feared the worst when their defender Jordan Chisholm conceded a 42nd-minute penalty-kick against Rob Roy, however experienced No.1 McNeil brilliantly kept out Kevin Watt’s well-struck effort.

Early second half proceedings were mainly notable for Peasy striker Michael Daly crashing a header of the crossbar before the visitors got their noses in front when Chris Craig’s far-post cross was headed back across goal by Peter Bradley and ace marksman Stephen McGladrigan turned the ball home.

That goal looked like settling matters for the Peasy but a Rob Roy corner-kick deep into injury-time was agonisingly deflected into his own net by Daly to earn the Rabs a lifeline they duly scorned as Willie Sawyers, Gary McMenamin and Gavin Mackie penalty-kicks were all foiled by that man McNeil.

The Ardagh Glass League Cup Final will be the predicted clash of big guns Hurlford United and Troon albeit the latter named Ayrshire outfit needed spot-kicks to get the better of Kilwinning Rangers at Portland Park.

The Chris Strain steered Buffs made a dream start to lead 1-0 through a Dean Agnew score that was cancelled out before half-time by an Adam Forsyth counter and Troon went on to clinch a 4-3 shoot-out success.

Hurlford clinched their final place in more emphatic fashion as goals from Stewart Kean, Ross Robertson, Ryan Donnelly, Phil Dolan and Paul McKenzie brought about a 5-1 victory over Maybole.
