IT was a mixed deadline day for Celtic boss Ronny Deila as he lost star man Virgil van Dijk but added Ryan Christie and Jozo Simunovic to his Parkhead squad.

The Norwegian was also in the hunt for another striker in the final few hours of business on Tuesday night and was linked with a move for Steven Fletcher, a deal that was never going to get off the ground, and Spanish star Michu.

Yet it has been reported that Celtic were told the forward was considering his future in the game when they enquired about his availability this week.

Michu only made a handful of appearances for Napoli last season and is remains to be seen what he will do in the coming months after the deadline passed without him moving on from Swansea again.

Having failed to land another striker to add to his attacking line, Deila could now have to use Anthony Stokes more than he had originally planned this term.

The Republic of Ireland international is out of favour at Parkhead and attracted interest from Bolton and Birmingham City on deadline day but no deal could be pushed through.

On move that was completed, of course, was that of van Dijk to Southampton as the Dutch defender quit Parkhead after a hugely successful spell in Glasgow.

Celtic received around £13million for van Dijk and it has been revealed that RKC Waalwijk have netted a £1,100 bonus as part of development fee.

The stopper trained with the Dutch minnows for 13 days at the start of his career before he moved to Willem II, who will bank £300,000 as part of the deal.

At St Mary's, van Dijk's former Celtic team-mate Victory Wanyama is reportedly set to snub a new Southampton deal after he saw a move to Tottenham blocked this week.

The Saints refused to budge in their bid to retain the midfielder and while they are set to offer him a new five-year deal to remain at the club, it appears Wanyama, who has two seasons left on his current deal, has his heart set on a Spurs switch.

One player who did make a move on deadline day was Michael Hector as the former Aberdeen defender clinched a surprise deal at Chelsea.

The Blues paid £4million to Reading for the 23-year-old but it could have been the other side of London where he moved to.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has revealed they just missed out on a deal for Hector, who spent time at Pittodrie two seasons ago.

Parish said: "We had a deal for Michael Hector at Reading – that was a done deal and we thought we had that one.

"Unfortunately the might of Chelsea came in and the player chose to go there, so at least we're getting the right targets.

"We must be doing the right thing, so that was disappointment but you don't win them all and we live to fight another day.

"I am sure Michael will do very well at Chelsea and we wish him all the best.

"We don't hold grudges, Chelsea are a big club and I think he has supported them since a kid, so you can understand why he chose them."

If the Hector move was one of the surprise deals of deadline day, the most talked about transfer, or not as it turned out, was David de Gea.

The war of words has continued between Man Utd and Real Madrid after the deal for the Spaniard fell through this week after months of speculation.

And the Red Devils are now set to make one last attempt to convince the keeper to remain at Old Trafford rather than join Real for free next summer.
