Aussie midfielder Tom Rogic is optimistic that this is the season where he makes the break-through at Celtic Park.

The midfielder netted a brace for his country yesterday as the Socceroos beat Bangladesh 5-0 in Perth in a World Cup 2018 qualifier and the 22-year-old believes performing on the national stage can help pave the way for a place in Deila’s side.

Rogic’s Celtic career has been hampered by injury but he has insisted he is physically ready to last the season – and is ready to stake a claim for a regular start in Ronny Deila’s side.

“I have spoken to the manager,” said Rogic. “We have had some discussions and although I will keep what has been said between ourselves, he has assured me that I will get chances to play but it is up to me now to take them.

“I have had a promising start to the season. The manager has shown a bit of faith in me and hopefully I am starting to show him that I can kick on from here.

“I feel as fit and strong as I have at any time in my professional career. But I know I have to keep working every day and hopefully more chances will come.

“I want to be a part of it with Celtic and I am confident that I can do that. There is lots of competition, especially in the middle of the park, but it is up to me to show that I can compete to get in there.”

Rogic’s goals for Australia will ensure that he returns to Celtic Park bolstered by the experience. Rogic found the net against St Johstone in Celtic’s weekend win over St Johnstone and getting among the goals is something he believes he can offer Deila.

“It is always nice to score,” he said. “I always like to think that I can offer that goal threat.

“It is a while since I have been in the international fold so it is very pleasing.

“When you go away and get picked to represent your country it gives you a lot of confidence and a lift. We have a lot of international players in the team here at Celtic and when you come back I think you do feel a bit refreshed and ready to go again.”

The travelling between Glasgow and Australia can prove to be difficult if Rogic maintains his place in the Aussie squad, but he is confident that he can balance the demands of playing for both club and country.

“Plenty of players have done it in the past and it is just what comes with playing for Australia,” he said. “I can deal with it, I think. We have lots of advice on the best way to prepare and lots of nutritional advice for travelling and what to do and when.

“It is an honour to play for your country and hopefully this season I can get games for both Celtic and Australia.”
