MARK WARBURTON insists he wasn’t tempted to dip into the transfer market and make a late bid to bolster his Rangers ranks on deadline day.

The Light Blues boss completed most of his rebuilding work early in the summer and made Arsenal starlet Gedion Zelalem his final recruit of the window a fortnight ago.

Warburton has seen his side make a storming start to the season as they have won their first eight games this term.

And there was no desire to add another player for the sake of it as the window closed without any further arrivals at Ibrox.

Warburton said: "Not at all. I turned my phone off and did our business early.

“I think the squad is in good shape and it's about getting the balance right.

“I'm happy about what we have done so far and it's about keeping our focus and I think we've done all right in recent games. Now we will turn our attention to what we do in January.

"We are really pleased with it. Not in an arrogant way, but we got our business done early.

“We got some boys we knew from down south like Andy Halliday and Jason Holt, we did well with the loan market and now we are speaking to clubs about the January window and what we can do there.

"Loads came up, but it's about giving the players a pathway. If there are too many players in the squad that can't get in the first team there could be a lack of unity in the dressing room and the dressing room is really strong here.

“The harmony is really good and the way the new boys have been welcomed has been fantastic. It's about getting the balance right.”

One player who left Ibrox on Tuesday was midfielder Andy Murdoch as he clinched a loan deal with League One side Cowdenbeath until January.

The 20-year-old has fallen down the pecking order after an impressive campaign last term and Warburton hopes he can come back ready to challenge for a first team berth.

He said: “Right now, he has got to be better than Andy Halliday.

“Andy Halliday has been outstanding and I am not going to drop him for Andy Murdoch right now. Andy can go away and play 30 games, come back revitalised.

“I don’t distrust him at all. He is a very talented footballer. This is to help him come back and be a Rangers player.

“He has to be better than Gedion, better than Nicky Law, better than Jason Holt, better than Dean Shiels. He has to be better than what we have here.

“As first-team manager, your job is to pick the best team for Rangers. I am not going to pick anyone out of sympathy. It is about picking the best team to win the game on Saturday or Sunday.”
