FORMER Rangers midfielder Ian Black is a target for Shrewsbury Town after turning out as a trialist for the League One outfit.

Black has been without a club since leaving Ibrox at the end of last season and saw a potential move to Blackpool stall in recent days.

He spent time training with Raith Rovers earlier this summer and played a pre-season fixture for Berwick Rangers but could now make the move to Shropshire.

SportTimes understands Black played for the Shrews’ second string in a 3-2 Development League win away to Wrexham yesterday alongside former Gers kid Rhys McCabe.

New Meadow boss, Paisley-born Micky Mellon, is on the lookout for midfield reinforcements after losing James Wesolowski to a knee injury and Black now has a chance to impress and win a deal south of the border.

The 30-year-old was one of a number of players to leave Rangers when their contracts were not renewed in the aftermath of the play-off final defeat to Motherwell that consigned the Light Blues to another campaign in the Championship.

Black hit out at chairman Dave King for the way his departure from the club was handled and claimed he had been made a ‘scapegoat’ after Stuart McCall’s side missed out on promotion at the end of a nightmare campaign at Ibrox.

While the likes of Lee McCulloch and Kris Boyd have won deals at Kilmarnock and Richard Foster has joined Ross County, Black has yet to find himself a new club.

But he could now head to England if Mellon decides to offer him a deal to play for the side currently 18th in the League One standings.
