IAN BLACK has set his sights on winning promotion to the English Championship after clinching a two-year deal with Shrewsbury Town.

SportTimes revealed last week the former Rangers midfielder was training with Micky Mellon’s side with a view to making a move to New Meadow.

Black was one of a host of players to leave Ibrox at the end of last season and was critical of the way his departure from the club was handled and comments made by chairman Dave King.

He has now sorted out his future by making the move south of the border and is confident Paisley-born Mellon can help him rediscover his top form in the coming months.

Black said: "I believe the gaffer will get the best out of me and I am delighted with that. I like a tackle, I have always been brought up to win the ball.

“That’s a mentality I have and I won’t change it so hopefully that can be a great asset to the team.

"I want to be a part of achieving something at every team I have been at, promotion is the aim here.

"It didn’t take too long to sort this move out which is great so I can just focus on my football.

"Overall I am delighted to be here and hopefully I can help bring success to the club.

"The spirits are high here at the moment and there is no reason why the boys shouldn’t be thinking of promotion as the overall aim.

"From the moment I met him I knew the gaffer would be good.

“He is straight talking which is how I like it and he doesn’t shy away from a confrontation, I think that is a Scottish thing!

"I like to be told honestly how I am doing. If I am not performing well then I like to be told because you need to be truthful with yourself to improve and help the team.”
